svchost.exe - Application Error : The instruction at
"0x745f2780" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be
"read".
=======================
OK, I admit it - I panicked! After 3 months of flawless, perfect operation
of my new SONY VAIO VGN-AR170P megalaptop with its Intel Centrino Duo
processor, 160GB HD, 1 GB RAM...I return from a trip, fire up the beast last
Friday morning (Friday the 13th) and WHAM! - I get this "svchost" error
popup. The desktop won't load fully, internet connections are sporadic,
mouse is sticking, I can't open the Task Manager, programs are slow to load,
etc, etc. I even try system restore points back to the date of purchase but
they won't work either.

One thing I did try was to adjust my pc clock/calendar backwards a day at a
time to see if there was a relationship between the svchost error popup and
Friday the 13th. No change until I got to 10/8/06 - and the popups went
away!?!?!? What gives? I adjusted the date forward to the 14th and the
problem went away!!!

At this point I thought I might have a trojan horse. Called SONY Support -
the tech suggested I had a virus that messed with the registry - that I might
have picked it up via a popup ad and suggested I get Windows Defender since I
was using Norton.

With the "VIRUS" seed planted firmly in my head, I contacted Norton support
and, after 2 hours of diagnostics - still no improvement - the Norton tech
said there was no hope for my problem, that the registry was fried and I
would have to start from scratch with a clean install of everything - I sure
am glad I made those system restore disks!

27 hours, 16 minutes later I had everything reinstalled with all the latest
and greatest Microsoft updates - I even had the MS Defender loaded! The
laptop was a real rocket and hadn't performed this well even when I took it
out of the box from SONY! I was proud of my accomplishments until yesterday.
IT HAPPENED AGAIN!

AU was turned on, I got a notice for SP3 - OK'd the install and (you guessed
it) - the svchost.exe popup appeared a few seconds into the install. Checked
CPU usage - up to 85% and climbing! PF usage was at 550MB and climbing!
Only a mild panic this time. Hard shutdown, restart...but this time I
ignored the AU message and tried a system restore back to 10/16. Wouldn't
let me. Dangit! Not again?!?

Decided to let it go until this morning and just by happenstance checked
into the discussion group and, after a few searches and review of "svchost"
posts, decided to take everyone's advice and turn off AU until MS comes up
with a fix. So far this seems to have worked. CPU usage back to normal, PF
usage back down to its usual 250-350 MB.

Thanks to all in the group for your suggestions.

Hook'em horns!
