yet another version

I have been installing Windows XP (clean install). I'm new to XP and I have
noticed that the provided Messenger is yet another version. It says version
4.7.

I can't find some options:
- When I start Messenger, I want to appear 'off line' initially. But even
when I log off in 'off line' state, when I start Messenger again, it still
does an auto logon.

- I can't find an option to show a custom picture of myself.

Why don't you install the latest version, which is has far more features
and all those options you mention (and easy to apply!

First though, check your new install is fully up-to-date...

I already had completed all XP security updates. But it seems I have Windows
messenger on the PC. I believe this is something else than MSN Messenger,
which I have on laptop.

So I assume the options I mentioned initially are not provided in Windows
messenger?

Windows Messenger shipped with XP. It uses the same technology as Windows Live
Messenger, which is the latest Messenger client from Microsoft. When you install
it, Windows Live Messenger will replace Windows Messenger as your Messenger
client.
http://download.live.com - be sure to unselect programs you do not want (such as
Windows Live family Safety and the Toolbar) when the installer launches. I
recommend Windows Live Mail as an upgrade to Outlook Express and Windows Live
Photo Gallery for managing pictures.

Hi,

Just because it hasn't been explicitly stated, Windows Messenger is based on what was MSN
Messenger 4.0 (they were the same codebase). The features you're looking for didn't exist
until MSN Messenger 6

Hi Jonathan,

Well, I took the chance... I now updated my XP PC to what seems to be
"LiveMessenger 2009".
I must admit now having back the two options I mentioned initially, but:

1. I suppose I can't get rid of the ad?

2. And another thing: I think being able to choose picture size is good. But
I think the "trendy" frames around the pictures is a bad idea. This wastes a
lot of "dead" (uninformative) space.
And... I haven't seen an option yet to disable this.

Please tell me I overlooked it?

I'm truly glad it didn't blow up on you

1. Same ways as before, patches, specialty Plus! skins.

2. As I'm sure you know, you can turn the display pictures themselves off so they're gone
completely, but you can't direct turn off the frames. Again, a Plus! skin can remove the
frame, but most skin creators do keep the same/similar format. You can peruse the available
Skins @ http://www.msgpluslive.net/skins, if you haven't seen them already.

Gosh, McAfee site advisor is turning red all over the place when I go to the
skins site! It says: spyware, adware and other malware... Who can you trust
these days?
