yet more problems with windows updates

Was getting this problem with updating the 4 previous critical updates for
win xp before service pack 2 and now getting it again with sp2.

Here is the problem (before xp2) windows does not boot up after 24 hours of
installing previous 4 critical updates, seems to get stuck whilst loading in
the keyboard and cant load in mouse driver, hence no boot up. However boots
in safe mode. found that if i deleted keyboard and started up again normally
it booted. it would do this infrequently. sorted it by uninstalling 4 updates.

Now i find i have the same problems as well as slow loading times for xp to
boot up, sometimes as long as 2 minutes. Bought a new keyboard in case old
one was ghoosed, fixed it sort of now it only does on every 2nd boots. have
to manually restart machine and tell it to load windfows normally, which then
corrupts display(big horrible black lines), restart the machine again and
they vanish leaving normal display. the display corruption has only started
happening with new keybord failing to load. only started doing this today and
instaled sp2 on saturday without a hitch. had to install the 4 previous
security updates mentioned in above paragraph before sp 2. im guessing one
of these is interfering with keyboard in some way. any help would be greatly
apprciated.

my specs
P4 2.6 (not a prescott) 800 fsb 512k cache
msi 865 neoPE neo 2
512mb kingston ddr ram
120 seagate barracuda hdd
coolermaster case
radeon 9800 pro
soundblaster audigy
ms intellipoint optical 5 button mouse
no name brand keyboard
win xp pro

I have almost the same problem. Cannot start my laptop computer after
installing XP SP2, same black lines and flashes, but impossoble to even get
into the setup or boot menu. I tried to attach different keyboards, but i
cannot seem to get anywhere past the black screen. Please help.

HI martin
what vid card do you have and what drivers are installed for it? im using
4.8 cats.
if you try other keyboards set them up as standard microsoft 102 keyboard as
thats what i had to do. however on the one i use i put the softawre in for
it. i think thats whats causing the graphical corruption. shutting
down/restarting seems to sort prob as stated previously stated. Still havent
found a fix for my prob yet though. gonna starting disabling processses and
closing services to see if this is the problem, thats gonna take me while and
be a proper pain
my specs
P4 2.6 (not a prescott) 800 fsb 512k cache
msi 865 neoPE neo 2
512mb kingston ddr ram
120 seagate barracuda hdd
coolermaster case
radeon 9800 pro
soundblaster audigy
ms intellipoint optical 5 button mouse
no name brand keyboard
win xp pro

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600
intel centrino 1,5 Ghz/600Mhz
ATI Radeon 9600
1024 MB internal mem 2x 512 ddr sdram
intel AC97 soundcard
Win XP pro

I only got the laptop two days ago and haven't figured out what kind of
hardware i have. The bios setup gives very little information and the dell
manuals aren't very helpful either.

I tried it in a docking station with an attached monitor, and then i get
passed the welcome screen so I can boot into safe mode, halfway the boot, it
gives the following error:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system
Attempt recovery by starting windows setup from the original cd-rom.

I tried to use the recovery console, but was unable to do something (didn't
know what to do at the prompt). I did not have this problem before installing
SP2.

Also, when i take the laptop out of the docking station, i get the black
screen with the flickering lines again.

Getting quite hopeless...

Sounds as if it could be a faulty radeon or laptop screen. i think my
graphical corruption is to do with a process called ato hotkey poller, it
doesnt like my keyboard. have disabled this, and so far no grapical
corruption. and loads up as normal without hanging so far. this could also
be the cause with my original problem for some reason. also having disabled
BITS, intrnet now runs like before and no slowdown when loading xp so far,
back to its usual 30/40 seconds. however have only rebooted 3 times with
above actions, so far so good. I would get in touch with dell tech support
if you only got it recently, in my experience they are normally quite good

Ok, will do that, because this evidently surpasses my knowledge. Thanx for
your help and support.
