Windows XP Home edition trying to install SP2 from a CD. I get the listed
error message. Reset permissions for all folders in Registry, scanned for
viruses and root kits, attempted to restore to an earlier date and it stated
I did not have the rights to restore. I created a new user name with
Administer rights, I started in Safe mode and finally I ran the Subinacl
program. Nothing has worked and since this is the home edition, I am unable
to set policy rights through the Administrative Tools section.

Any thoughts?

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot, AVG
Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before attempting
to install the update(s). If you disable a third-party firewall, do NOT
connect to the internet without having the Windows Firewall enabled!

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates.

Thanks Bear, I uninstalled AV and turned off the Windows firewall with no
success. I'll go ahead and get started with a Support request.

Thanks

I said nothing about uninstalling your AV app or turning off the Windows
Firewall!
