Are you sure that OLE_fix.reg fixes actives in windows 2000?

Hello all, =D

I realized today that I could not use activex controls on a friend's win2k
sp4 system. I read most of the forums related activex control discussion and
did bunch of things including running the OLE_fix.reg file some of the MVPs
suggested. I read the knowledge bases regarding activex control problem and
followed their advice. Windowsupdate sites are on my trusted zone list, and
all activex security options are on enable or prompt. None seemed to work. I
am curious where the problem is. Should I have tried to uninstall KB896688
and then run the OLE_fix.reg file? How can I see whether I have KB896688
installed? It does not show up on the add/remove program files section. Any
clues?

If you look at the Technet Bulletin (for Professionals) for the particular
update MS05-XXX and plough down through the text, you will eventually find a
list of files for that update with there version numbers. ( Different
versions apply depending whether you have hot Fixes installed or not). Just
compare the version with what is on your PC.

Well, the REG file works on every yet released Windows version.

What's the error message you/he get/s?

Nope - but KB896688 has been superseded by KB905915 in the meantime.
Although the "clitches" on *some* systems are the same with KB905915
as with KB896688.

Hi Alan, Hi Ottmar,

Thank you both for your quick replies.

The error messages I am getting are 0x8ddd0004 and 0x8ddd0011. I checked the
windowsupdate.log file and the last update I received was at 10-12-2005. I am
not able to see the install activex control bar when trying to enter update
download section.

I will check out the security bullteins to figure out which version applies
to my friend's machine. If you can tell anything further before then, let me
know.

"Something's" preventing the installation/activation of the
WUWebControlClass-ActiveX control.

Your friend has Admin rights while trying to access the Windows Update
site?

Is there any "Security" software running in the background (Anti Virus
software, Personal Firewall Software)?

I did not think there was a firewall issue, but just in case, I turned the
Sygate Personal Firewall off to see whether the problem would duplicate. Yes,
it does.
I am pretty sure this issue has to do with the installation of Activex
Control.

I first thought it could be a copyright protection mechanism, but even at
other Activex plug-in sites and with internet options/advanced/multimedia
options turned on, the plug-ins won't install. They prompt for installation,
but I can't see successful results or even a progress bar.

There is no backround anti spyware, anti-popupblocker, or antivirus software
running. But they are installed and report a virus- and spyware free system.

So what is the plan? How can I figure out the patch number that caused this
problem?

I'ld uninstall that PFS. You may also try to enter the following line
by line into a command shell (Start -> Run -> cmd)

regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll /s
regsvr32 dssenh.dll /s
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll /s
regsvr32 initpki.dll /s
regsvr32 jscript.dll /s
regsvr32 mssip32.dll /s
regsvr32 msxml.dll /s
regsvr32 msxml2.dll /s
regsvr32 msxml3.dll /s
regsvr32 qmgr.dll /s
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll /s
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll /s
regsvr32 sccbase.dll /s
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll /s
regsvr32 softpub.dll /s
regsvr32 vbscript.dll /s
regsvr32 wintrust.dll /s
regsvr32 wuapi.dll /s
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll /s
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll /s
regsvr32 wuauserv.dll /s
regsvr32 wucltui.dll /s
regsvr32 wups.dll /s
regsvr32 wups2.dll /s
regsvr32 wuweb.dll /s

Hm, definitly no service of these running?

I'm not sure, a patch is the cause for the problem.

I am looking other MVP's suggestions and trying to do them all, although most
questions i see relate to winXP activex problems. I cleaned the history,
cookies, etc.. and i just registered some services I saw on a different post.
2 of them failed, but they could also be services only related to an XP
system.
They were wuaueng.dll and sccbase.dll. They cannot be found. Could this be
the problem?

Just to be precise, I'm no MVP

Maybe. The Windows Update Agent may fix that:

I have a WinXP system with Sygate personal firewall on and had no problem
with installing activex; therefore, I don't think it would have an opposite
effect on win2k.
To answer your earlier question, I have administrative privilidges.

How can I reinstall the .dll's that cannot be found?
