"you are about to view pages over a secure connection"

I'm running WinXP and IE8. I've been getting the "secure connection" message
a lot lately. It's showing up at a web sudoku site I've been using for
years, and it's even appearing sometimes when I open IE to my ISP's home
page. Any idea of why it's happening? (For what it's worth, I keep Avira
AntiVir updated daily and scan once a week. I've also updated and scanned
with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware. None of them found
anything.

I've since discovered at least a couple more people with this problem, and
it looks like it's related to Google advertising. On some websites, it
occurs when "AdChoices" appears; and on others, individual ads show
"googleleads" when you mouse over them. Any idea of what's going on and what
can be done to stop it? The secure connection message is at the least
annoying. I'm also concerned of course that it involves malware.
