I haven't had this happen but does it appear to be connected? There's no

If I were to come across this then I think I'd uninstall the program, delete
any associated files, and then re-install it. As a REALLY strange
alternative (call me insane if you'd like) I'd log on to Windows Messenger
(the one that came with the PC as opposed to the one you downloaded) and see
if you can send/receive messages with that. It's likely that firewall rule
sets won't match application so that won't rule out firewall but in the
first beta I had some funky issues and as a lark tried that and it fixed it.

Last but not least I'd listen to hear what Mr. Kay has to say about it. ;-)
