Ok, I got bored and fired up VM Ware and ran Vista and looking around
the startmenu, I found the games... solitair, minsweeper, chess and some
others. Ok, So I looked at where they were and copied the whole
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games" folder to the XP host machine.

None of them would run in XP... big suprise... A little googling
revealed many articles on the web and news groups alike:

The application is coded as a Vista only workable game.

You cannot copy the files over. If you do and try to run the
application, it
will tell you the program is not designed for that type of Windows.
</quote>

Are you kidding me? Under XP it says "not a valid win32 application" for
any of the games. Tell me, what the hell makes the games so darn
special, internally? I suspect they are plain-ol' 32bit PE apps that are
"packed" in a wrapper that XP doesn't know how ot deal with. Such
wrappers are generally used to compress/encrypt a running program (it's
image that's in memory.)

I just don't understand why go to such lengths to prevent the games from
being copied. Such simple games, almsot all of which had counter parts
as far as Windows 2.0... you can run 16 bit (3.x era) solitair,
minesweeper, reversi, as well as the popular taipei and other cloens of
that popular asia tile game, chess, freecell, hearts and others (many
were in the microsoft entertainment pack) under XP just fine, yet you
can't runthe newest simple-games that come with Vista... oi vey.

I also got a laugh about the graphics acceration error when I started
minesweeper on Vista (I guess vmware's virtual graphics card isn't
exactly a Geoforce 8800 GTX), even though it stall ran, but to even
require that for minesweeper... good flippin grief... (it makes about as
much sense as the rest of Vista.)

Let me see if I understand this: You're criticizing Vista because its
features won't run on XP?

Also: You criticize Vista, yet some of its features are so intriguing to you
that you want to run them on XP?

The point I'm getting from your post is that you think Microsoft sucks
because you can't steal features from Vista.

I got really upset when i tried to run vista games on my old msx
machine. Guess what, they were not compatable and did not run. Cant
think why not, maybe it is because I was trying to run a game designed
for one OS on another that was made before VISTA existed.

There's more to installing programs than copying a few .exe files!

I guess that Vista games should work on a DOS 6.0 system too.
After all they are both Microsoft programs.

Mr. Wrap:

You toss around a lot of jargon, but it is apparent you have no idea what
you're talking about. That's OK, we all started somewhere. You may want to
try microsoft.public.windows.vista.games, or better yet, an XP forum. I doubt
you'll get much traction trolling in this group.

With that said, there are people running Vista games on XP. They are smarter
than both of us. I took 10 seconds and found them. That means I now know more
than you. Really, instead of playing Purble Place on XP you should pick up a
book. I'd suggest some topics (that are also good Google fodder), but instead
of me giving you a fish you should learn to feed yourself.

Saran,

I got the same message when I bodge-copied some casino games from W98 to
a then new XP for my wife. I eventually found the dll that was required
in a system folder and copied that as well.
I suspect you suspect wrongly.

you are totally right about what you are saying.

However I have seen floating around the internet (and actually tried it
once) the vista
games for XP, somehow they had adapted them so they would work on XP..

I have even seen other things like the sidebar, and screensavers.. but I ask
you why go through all that fuss?

I dont like the games anyway.. first thing I do when I install XP or Vista
is to
go to remove the stuff I dont need.. the games are the first to go....
