Zero byte updates after virus problem

Hello, I am trying fo finish up cleaning someone's pc from a typical virus
and spyware attack and the windows update feature seems to be messed up. I
can see the number of updates that are needed, a mix of s/w, h/w and
critical. I download the patches and they fail to install, so I try again
and they show a zero byte size and fail to install. Curiously, the critical
updates did install on there own as part of the automatic d/l routine. So it
seems to be something about me initializing the update routine. The problem
of course is that I still can't do the s/w & h/w since they aren't part of
the automatic critical install routine.

When you try to install an update, and THEN it fails, you have already
downloaded it. Windows Update is actually designed to save updates after
approval of download, even after a significant break in communication. The
Background Intelligent Transfer Service maintains that transfer until it is
complete, or breaks with a different error.

If you are concerned, try this:
1. Open a command prompt
a. Click Start
b. Click Run
c. Type: cmd
d. Press the <Enter> key, or click OK
2. When this opens, at the command prompt, type: net stop wuauserv <Enter>
<--remember this is the Enter key, so please do not type E-n-t, etc.
3. Still in the command prompt, verify that the Windows Update service
stopped by reading the result of the command from step 2.
4. Type the following into the command prompt: cd
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution <Enter>
5. Type the following: rd /s /q Download <Enter>
6. Type the following: net start wuauserv <Enter> ...and verify that this
service started
7. Quit the command prompt by typing: exit <Enter>
8. Now, please try Windows Update once more, and see if all of your updates
are listed with values, instead of 0kb.
