Zero Configuration missing in services and regedit

I had to re-install Vista after wireless went down, couldn't access internet
explorer, Defender wouldn't work and security center couldn't be turned on.

Since re-install I can't access internet via wireless, only through ethernet.

I did not install the router utility (to avoid wzcsvc issues)

I see that zero configuration isn't to be found in services and also can't
see it in regedit
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\WZCSVC). So I can't add
DWORD. What can I do to get this working again? Thanks

Vista it was renamed to "WLAN AutoConfig".

Now I really don't know why the ethernet works and the wireless doesn't.

Is it best to install the wireless router utility program or let WLAN handle
this in services.msc?

see if you have the correct driver installed, sometimes windows update has
drivers but when you install them
they are not as good as the normal ones that come with the hardware...

did you install a driver from windows update? I would try using the one from
windows first... I prefer using default stuff
but if all fails you might try the one that came with your wireless adaptor.

sorry let me rephrase that:

did you install a driver from windows update? sometimes these do not work
well with cards.
I have seen that windows update tries to install some times generic drivers
that cause hardware to
not work correctly! I have seen this in sound cards and lan cards.

As for the configuration utility, I would try using the one built in on
windows first... I prefer using default stuff
but if all fails you might try the one that came with your wireless adaptor.

Thanks for your help so far.

As I had to re-install Vista, when it booted up it found the wireless
adapter pci card installed and windows update then downloaded "Network
Controller" (I use a Sitecom MIMO XR wireless PCI card) so it downloaded that
driver. It seems to be the correct driver when I access Device Manager.

I would ideally like to start again - should i: delete the driver, shut
down, remove the pci card, re-boot, shut down, re-boot, and install the card
and the driver from the manufacturer? This should ensure the correct driver
is used and not the generic one - right?

just install the driver from the manufacturer on top,
you will always have the "rollback driver" of windows
in case you want to revert back to the one you have now...

Please correct your quoting. You are quoting the OP but below your signature

You've given good advice about the OP needing to install a driver for
his/her wireless; the lack of a driver is why s/he doesn't see anything for
the function. However, it is not a good idea to install drivers from
Windows Update. The drivers on Windows Update are not "default stuff". The
WU drivers tend to be wrong and/or outdated. It is particularly important
with laptops to get drivers from the laptop mftr. since all the hardware
used is proprietary.

To the OP: See the following general drivers information:

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.
