zip or compressed files in Vista opening with wrong programs?

Judging from Yahoo Answers, a lot of people are having trouble restoring
the default built in zip file function in Vista which works by
right-clicking.

If someone mistakenly right-clicks an zip folder and goes Open With >
Notepad for example, after that you lose you zip function, and the zip
folders are not yellow folders with zippers.

I need a response from someone who has had this problem and who has
solved it. The rest of you are well meaning; however, Vista shouldn't
need another zip file program, and going Open With > Choose Program
doesn't work, nor does going Control Panel > Program > Default Programs
> Associate a File Type or Protocol with a Specific Program work.

I had this problem 6 months ago, and it seemed to solve itself. I
suspect Vista after a few days restored its own defaults.

for the .zip you can also try ..

assoc .zip=CompressedFolde

It worked. Thank you. I can't believe a newsgroup beats Yahoo Answers.
I had to merge the zipfix_vista.reg from your link in the
administrator account. That made the zip files extract by right-clicking.

To make the zip folders yellow folders with zippers again, I went Start
> Goto All Programs > Expand the Accessories Folder > Right Click

Command Prompt > Select Run as Administrator

Windows Vista will ask you if you were sure that you wanted to open the
command prompt as an administrator, say yes. Now from there type:

cmd /c assoc .zip=CompressedFolder .

My first port of call for any problems (either my own or clients) ar
the forums / newsgroups - the vast majority of people who post do s
from a willingness to help others and the solutions come from the rea
world. Also they tend to be more specialized in nature so can pin dow
an answer more quickly

glad to have helpe
