Zip files

Does Windows Vista have its own built-in process for unzipping files? I have
WinZip on my computer (not sure how it got there), and it's screwing up the
downloading and installation of several programs. Can I uninstall WinZip and
still have Windows Vista unzip zip files automatically?

What version of WinZip? I have 9.0 SR1 installed on this Vista box and
everything is fine.

I'm pretty sure Vista has it's own built in Zip functionality, just like XP.

Windows Vista natively supports ZIP files. However, it doesn't support RAR
files.

Zip folders are a shell extension of Windows Explorer. There is no
standalone utility, per se. But, yes, besides viewing the contents of a
..zip file, in Vista you can unzip .zip files, or make .zip files, using the
right-click context menu. If that's all you want, you don't need WinZip.

HaHa, don't blame me. You posted it.

Yes Vista has it's on zip feature built in, but it is very limited. If
you do not like WinZip, you can use the free "7-Zip" instead. I use it
with no problems, and it supports RAR to.

'7-Zip' (http://www.7-zip.org/)

After you install it, go into 7-Zip's options and select all the file
associations.

If you uninstall Winzip, Vista should go back to it's built-in one, if
not then look here to get it back.

How, exactly, is WinZip "...screwing up the downloading and installation of
several programs."?

Vista's native support for compressing and decompressing files does not
offer anywhere near the number of features WinZip provides. Which version of
WinZip? WinZip is not a free program. If you're not sure how it got there...
is this a new PC that has a trial version of WinZip installed? If so, and
all you care to do is decompress zipped files, then I'd say, sure, uninstall
the WinZip trial version and use Vista's native support.

Don't know about having Vista decompress files automatically using the
native feature...
