I have the 0x80072EE2 when attempting Windows updates and have applied the
    fixes in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;836941 - I
also disabled the Windows firewall (I don't have anything else on my laptop)
but I still can't get the updates. I don 't have a proxy server. My problem
started about two weeks ago and I can't identify a cause from that period. I
use McAfee 7.0 and keep my DAT current, as well as Lavasoft Adaware which I
also disabled to see if there was a silent blocking - no help.

Thanks for the info, it was very helpful. Ultimately I discovered that since
I setup Surf control Web Filter on the server and had blocked a suspicious
site named watson.microsoft.com 65.54.206.49 and two variants such as
watson296.watson.microsoft.com 65.54.206.48, and possibly some domains at
207.46.xxx.xxx, I was blocking the updates. By unblocking them I could
obtain Win Updates - but I find it odd that these sites are not listed by
microsoft as part of the Win Updates.
