In ie6 you could use the search window side bar for your own needs, by useing
_search as a target in your links like <a target="_search"

is this no longer available in ie7 or is it yet to be added?

  2. This has been disabled for IE7, but you can turn it back on using Tools |
Internet Options | Advanced | Enable Search Pane.

I am using IE7B2 and have turned on search in the settings yet don't seem to
be able to access the search pane (on left as in IE6 and previous). Presume
I am doing something wrong. Can you offer the step-by-step to do this?

  4. Please confirm: You checked the "Enable search pane" box and restarted the
browser and you still cannot target the _search pane?

Yes, correct. In my previous IE6 install I had Google as defaul for search.
I saw notes on problem with Goodle so I deleted Google as search option,
still after reboot, verified Search on and still no pane. I then uninstalled
IE7, reinstalled it, and still none.

I wonder how complete the uninstall is. This is a Compaq 2100 laptop with
XP Home (SP2) and with all current updates, even using Microsoft OneCare.
Yet, when I reinstall, the title banner says "Microsoft Internet Explorer
provided by Compaq". The defaults from before, such as Search on, are still
there. Yet, again no search pane.

To be honest, not sure how the search pane is to be invoked. There is no
search button, no menu option. Again, some step-by-step would be helpful.
Also, if I have a corrupted install, how to completely remove previous
install and settings to get a clean start.

    Thanks!
    Matthew
