A difficult migration (2000 -> 2003)

    Hardware is not a direct issue for the roles. If you move a
    2000 server (disk or backup/restore) to new hardware the
    roles it holds will go with it.
    Easiest is to upgrade it in place -- either before or after
    changing the hardware.

    If you wish to introduce new hardware into the domain
    without upgrades, then install Win2003, make it a DC
    and (if needed) transfer the roles (and make it a GC properly.)

    You would need to transfer the roles to remove (DCPromo
    to non-DC) the current role holders.

    Transferring the roles is relatively easy using the GUI tools
    or only a bit more tedious with the command line NTDSUtil
    (in the roles section).

    It's actually easier to do from the command line IF you must
    transfer all 5 roles (the GUI requires 3 different tools.)

    Do NOT use "SEIZE" -- be sure to TRANSFER.

    As to the exact steps, just search the KB or wait for someone
    to post the article numbers (I don't keep such things memorized.)
