  4. Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here. Let's also thank Larry and Merv for the input.

According to your description, I understand that you get error when you
open backup node in Server Management console on SBS. If I have
misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, since you have try all the steps in Robert's reply
without result, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
    resolve this issue:

    Step 1: Reinstall backup component:
    ===================
Perform a full backup of the SBS server. After that launching the
integrated setup from Add/Remove components and reinstall the backup will
not affect the other components on the SBS server. In addition, please do
not run it through your SBS CD 1 since it brings up the OS setup of SBS.
Please run it from Add/remove components.

    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
    2. Select Windows Small Business Server 2003 and then click Change/Remove.
    The Setup Wizard appears.
    3. Click Next to start the wizard.
    4. On the Windows Configuration page, click Next.
    5. On the Component Selection page, Select Reinstall next to Server Tools.
Select None next to Intranet, Monitoring, Networking, Administration, and
    Client Deployment.
    6. On the Component Summary page, click Next.
    7. Click Finish.

Note, if you applied SP1, and the prompt appears, insert a disc for Windows
Small Business Server 2003 with Service Pack 1. To resolve this problem, we
    need follow these steps:

    1. Start a cmd prompt and change directory to the SP1 download folder (or
the SBS03_SP1 folder on the SBS SP1 PKG_CD2).
    2. Type "SBS2003-KB885918-SP1-X86-ENU.EXE /x" (with no quotation marks) and
    press Enter.
    3. Specifying a path for the extracted files (such as C:\SBSSP1).
    4. Insert the original SBS (non-SP1) Disc 3 into the CDROM.
    5. Copy all the folders and the files from the
    <CDROM>:\SBS\CLIENTAPPS\SHAREPT folder to the
    C:\SBSSP1\cd3\sbs\clientapps\sharept folder.
    6. Run the SBS Integrated Setup, and when the setup program prompts for the
CD3, point it to the cd3 folder created in the previous step.

Step 2: Run the backup wizard:
    ======================
    1. Open Server Management console, locate on the Backup node
    2. Configure the Configure Backup link in right pane to open Backup
    Configuration Wizard
    3. Click Next, change existing backup settings or create a new backup
    settings, and finish the wizard.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

    1. Please capture screenshots on the error messages and send the pictures
    to me at

    2. Please send me the backup log files:

The Backupxx.log files in the folder ''C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup
    User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data''.

Note: Before reproduce the problem, please open NTBACKUP, click
"Tools"->"Options" and then check "Detailed" on the "Backup Log" tab. Then
reproduce this issue and send the backup log to me (Tools->Report).

    3. Gather MPS network report on SBS:

    a. Download MPSrepot_network from
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
    15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

    b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe on the server box.

    c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
    take 10~15 minutes.

    d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
    %SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

    e. Send the .cab file directly to me at

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

    Terence Liu(MSFT)

  6. Hello Gerard,

    Thank you for update.

From the IIS metabase, the settings are properly.

Based on my further research, I suggest you try the following steps:

    1. Please check the Scheduled Tasks run as settings:

    1) Click Start, point to Control Panel, point to Scheduled Tasks.
    2) Under the lists of Tasks, right click "Back Up Small Business Server"
    and select Properties
    3) On the Task tab, verify the "Run As" option specifies NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

    2. If the issue persists, please open the Register and modify the following
    key to "2"
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\Backup\Backup
    Configuration to 2

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

    1. Please open the Server Management console on SBS, locate on the Standard
Management -> Backup node. Do you get the same issue in the right pane?

    2. Please open the Server Management console on SBS, locate on the Standard
Management -> Monitoring and Reporting node. Do you get the same issue in
    the right pane?

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

  7. Hello Gerard,

    Thank you for update.

Based on my further research, I suggest we try the following steps:

    1. Change the MIME types for the virtual directory:

    a. Please open the IIS, locate on the Default Web Site -> Backup
    b. Right click the backup, open the properties window
    c. Select HTTP Headers tab, MIME Types button, select .CAB, click Remove
    button
    d. Click OK 3 times to finish.

    2. Please add the ISAPI Filters to Default Web Site

    a. Please open the IIS, locate on the Default Web Site
    b. Right click the Default Web Site, open the properties window
    c. Select ISAPI Filters tab, click Add button
    d. Input OwaLogon in the Filter name box, and Browse to the C:\Program
    Files\Exchsrvr\ExchWeb\bin\auth\OwaAuth.dll
    e. Click OK twice to finish

    3. If the issue reoccur after the above steps, I suggest we perform the
following steps to reinstall the whole Server Tools:

    a. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
    b. Select Windows Small Business Server 2003 and then click Change/Remove.
    The Setup Wizard appears.
    c. Click Next to start the wizard.
    d. On the Windows Configuration page, click Next.
    e. On the Component Selection page, Select Reinstall next to Server Tools.
Leave Reinstall next to Intranet, Monitoring, Networking, Administration,
    and Client Deployment.

Note: It is different from the previous steps.

    f. On the Component Summary page, click Next.
    g. Click Finish.

Note: You need to input the SBS disks.

    4. Then, rerun the CEICW to configure the SBS again.

    5. Run the Backup Configuration Wizard (Server Management -> Backup ->
Configure Backup) again to configure the schedule time.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

Gather the Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the folder
"%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs" and send to me.

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

    Best regards,

    Terence Liu(MSFT)

  9. Hello Gerard,

    Thank you for update.

First I want to explain that since we have performed some troubleshooting
steps and the issue remains. I think this problem may be a little complex
and we may need spend more time to troubleshooting this issue.

From the backup log we know all the backup are success without any error.
Therefore, this is only a IIS web page issue.

From your metabase of IIS, I know you move the IIS root folder to E:\
partition. From the Backup virtual directory properties, we can see, your
    ASP.net file location is incorrect.

Based on my research, there should be no web.config file in inetpub folder.
Do you find web.config file in e:\inetpub\? If yes, please backup it and
delete it. Then, test this issue.

If the issue persists, please delete the folder e:\inetpub\backup, and
Reinstall backup component again to see if it help:
    ===================

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

    1. Please gather all files in e:\inetpub\ and compress them and send to me.

    2. Gather IIS log:

    a. Open IIS snap-in.

    b. Right click Default Web Site and click Properties.

    c. Uncheck the "Enable Logging" box and click Apply.

    d. Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 folder and move all files to a
    backup location.

    e. Check "Enable Logging" box and click OK.

    f. Run IISReset command.

    g. Reproduce the problem (access Backup snap and access
http://servername/backup) and send the log file in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 folder to me for research.

    3. Gather IIS Metabase again:

    1) Download the IIS Resource Kit tools from the following page:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=56FC92EE-A71A-4C73-
    B628-ADE629C89499&displaylang=en

    2) Install it, run MBExplorer (Metabase Explorer)

    3) Right click the "LM" node and choose "Export to file".

    4) Specify a file name, specify the password and finish the export.

    5) Send the file and the password to

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

    Best regards,

    Terence Liu(MSFT)
