accidentally deleted file

I accidentally deleted a data file that was located on
our server running Windows Server 2000. I was using . I
was opening a file using an application on one of the
client computers and I right clicked on the file from the
Open File dialog box. I accidently selected delete from
the drop down menu. I realized what I'd done a split
second after I'd done it but it was too late. The file
is gone. It's not in the recycle bin of either the
client computer or the server.

 

Do you have volume shadow copy service running for any share on that drive?
If so add a share for the folder where you delete the file and then look at
it's history. The file would be there for a past time point (volume shadow
copy monitors whole drives, not just shares).

If not you could restore a backup if you have one or look at some 3rd party
utilities which can undelete files from NTFS.

I recommend Executive Software's Undelete. It is inexpensive and easy to
configure. Just saving one file makes it worth it. The problem with
backups and shadow copy is that they occur once a day (usually). If the
file is created or edited and then almost immediately deleted, it won't be
available.

There may be other 3rd party software.
