Hello, I removed monitoring tool on SBS 2003 and cannot
add a distribution group because public folder is not
    addable when creating the group.
I also received the error when running server setup and
it asked me to create a test distribution group because
it was unable to create one.
When I uncheck public folders upon creation of the
    distribution group, it creates successfully.
I have looked through KB and other resources without any
idea how to take care of this problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Roger

  2. Roger,

Are you getting any errors in the event logs from mssql$sbsmonitoring or
anything else in the time frame of when you were attempting to re-install
the monitoring component? If you rename the \program files\microsoft sql
server\mssql$sbsmonitoring directory can you install it then?

Hello David, my application event log has an error every
few errors "Could not connect to the monitoring database.
This can occur when there are multiple connections to the
database. Wait a short period of time, and then try
again. If this error persists, run the Monitoring
Configuration Wizard, and select Reinstall monitoring
    features." Event 4104
From To Do list running the monitoring configuration
wizard, error encountered running the wizard, reinstall
    using server setup.
I will try what you suggested renaming the directory you
indicated and try again. I will let you know what happens.
    Thanks again for your assistance!

David, I checked and could not find a mssql$sbsmonitoring
directory. I have under Program Files SQL Directories
    80, SQL, and mssql$sharepoint
Any idea how to reinstall the missing directory
    mssql$sbsmonitoring?
    Thank you,

Hello Merv, I tried to remove the monitoring tool with
server setup and keep coming up with this error.
"An error occurred while creating distribution groups.
Open Active Directory Users and Computers, and manually
create a test distribution group to verify that Active
    Directory is running. Rerun Setup."
I try to add a test distribution group through the Server
    Management/Active Directory Users and
Computers/Distribution Group Wizard and come up with this
error "The wizard could not successfully configure this
group. The following could not be completed -The Exchange
public folder could not be created. Do you want to keep
this group?" I then see the test folder archive under the
Public Folders in Exchange but not in the Manage
    Distribution Groups.
Any further assistance on resolving this problem is
    greatly appreciated!

  8. What happens if you just try to install Monitoring (not delete it first)
    with the setup program?

Hello Merv, same error happens when attemtping to
reinstall the monitoring tool. I have tried it severally
times without success and same error.
I tried to Monitoring and Reporting in Server Management
and received new error "Snap-in Creation Failed".
I used to receive this error in Application Log every few
hours "Could not connect to the monitoring database. This
can occur when there are multiple connections to the
database. Wait a short period of time, and then try again.
If this error persists, run the Monitoring Configuration
Wizard, and select Reinstall monitoring features.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."."
But haven't received it since trying to uninstall the
    monitoring tool.
Please let me know if you have any ideas how to get this
    working again.
Thanks again for your prompt replies to my problem.

  10. Roger,

As a test can you try setting all of your other instances of SQL/MSDE to
disabled (including their associated services/apps/agents sqlagent$name,
    SharePoint Timer Service for example)
    Reboot the server
Then see if you can install the SBS Monitoring component.

Be sure and note down their original startup values so you can change them
    back after the test.

  11. Roger,

If possible, could you zip up the files in the \program files\microsoft
windows small business server\support directory and email them to me.. Keep
in mind you will need to remove the "online." from my address. Want to see
take a look to see if maybe the msde_sbsmonitoring.log and/or the event.log
or error.log give some more ideas.

  12. Roger,

Another log that could be helpful would be the sbsmsi-monitoring.log in the
    \program files\microsoft integration\windows small business server 2003\logs
    directory.
