    Current Environment:
    3 Windows 2000 Domain Controllers
    Native Mode

I am preparing to introduce a windows 2003 server as a domain controller to
my network. I have successfully implemented this in a test lab.

However, I have two questions outstanding:
    1. Is there any reason not to bring this new Windows Domain Controller into
the network as a virtual server (specifically VMWare). It will eventually
    perform DNS and DHCP.

    2. Management is still a little leary of the upgrade. They are suggesting
that I bring one of the three original servers down prior to bringing the new
2k3 server online as a precaution. The idea being, if there is a problem we
will still have a good copy of AD offline but ready to bring up.

    3. Will I be able to bring a Windows 2k3 server in as a domain without all
    three replicating?

    I appreciate any help.

You should have no problem bringing in the new server but:

It is not a bad idea to bring down one of the other servers before bringing
in the other as extra precaution. What you do not want to do is raise your
forest or domain level to 2k3 as it suggest from your subject but not your
message. You can't do this until you remove ALL 2000 DC's and only have 2k3
    server as domain controllers.

Bringing it in as a vm is nor good or bad. What you will have to remember
is a VM shares it's resources among other VM's so you must make sure you
have enough resources avail for the DC to perform it's functions.

Also be more descriptive on question 3.

Are you bringing in the new DC as a seperate domain from the existing?

    Jamie,

    Thanks for the feedback.

    1. I will bring one of the servers down during the promotion of the Windows
2003 Server. When I am sure the promotion and replication are fine, I will
bring the third 2000 serve back up. Is there any reason I can not leave the
third DC offline for 24 hours or more?

    2. I will be sure to leave the Active Directory in Windows 2000 Native Mode
    during this process.

    Thanks for the fast feedback.

  5. Hello mmcginley,

    see inline

    Best regards

When adding a DC as VM check out this one:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888794
Ofcourse you can do it, but if have upgraded now more often from 2000 to
2003 including exchange in running environment's and except for the exchange
tasks, i had no downtime for users (not really because i did it at COB).
If you bring down one DC, at least after 59 days you have to bring it online
again. If you over 60 days you are not able to get it back replicating without
    problems.
Can not really understand what you mean with this question, please clarify
    a bit.
