Add DFS to all my DC's ?

  1. I'll be the first to admit the info on DFS and FRS is pretty overwhelming,
I've been reviewing as much as I can find, but can't seem to get a good
handle on what I need yet.

We're already up and running 35 sites with DC's and ntfrs is running ok.

I'm looking into adding a 500MB share of common files such as new AV
installation data, MS Office install point, so that the local machines can
use site aware data. This will let us start deploying software nationally
    via GPO.

While I'm testing this, the data in the folders is totally disposable btw..

I have the data folder located on a DC here in my corp office, I created a
Domain DFS root, then pointed the root at that folder, then I added a link,
and pointed that at folder #2 at a different location on the same server.

As far as linking/adding other DC's how do I get this data folder to
replicate to all the other DC's or does it have to exist on the other DC's
first? (a lot more work for me)

    thanks!

    Diane

  2. Diane,

FRS will handle the initial replication. Right click the root and hit
    Configure Replication Topology.

Be careful that you don't overwhelm your WAN doing this all at once.

  3. Thanks Brian,

I pretty much came to the conclusion that the shares had to all be created
    before I could link them.

So I created a small batch file that created the shares and permissions on
all the DC's then just started manually creating the links. We did decide on
hub and spoke (would have been nice if AD had let us choose this when we set
    up manual replication for it)

So far things are going well, We're going to drop a 20MB install package
into the DFS over the holiday weekend to see if it cocmes through properly.

So far all the tests have been replicating perfectly.
