Adding second DNS on second domain controller

    Guys,

I promooted a second domain controller and installed DNS on that server.
Without doing anything, the data is automatically populated for Forward
Lookup Zones and Reverse Lookup Zones.

But when I click on the computer name on the top level on the left side
(second domain controller), I can see that on the right panel, it says my
DNS server has not been configured.

What do I need to do? Not sure if I need to configure a zone for it. This
is a test environment. I have looked at the live DNS servers and they looked
identical with one exception of the "Cached Lookups".

    Hi
    Inline:
Is like magic, isn't that beautiful.
Can you confirm that you've the correct DNS server selected?

You probably don't need to do notthing, the zone is already replicated to
that server because the DNS is AI, so just run dcdiag and netdiag on that
server and make sure that no errors are shown.

    Jorge,

Thanks for you reply. I did select the correct DNS Server. My guess is
that if you don't do it manually, the Information icon display will show up
    saying you haven't configured DNS.

I ran dcdiag/netdiag and they looked fine.

I do have one question though. If I clicked on the first DNS server, I see
"Root Hints" & "Forwaders", but not on the second DNS server (Icon with 4
    bluish dots).

On our productions dns servers (both Domain Controllers also), they both
have them. How do I create those?

    Thanks,
    Tnt

I don't have a DNS server to check that at the moment, if I'm not mistaken
these Icons were only introduced in SP1 or SP2 (not sure), checkk if the SP
level is the same, if it's the same you may want to try to uninstall DNS
service, reboot, ad then install it again (DON'T delete the zones because
that action will remove the DNS zones from AD and that isn't required, just
uninstall the service and reinstall it, and then replicate the zones
    normally).

    Jorge,

The server that has the icons is without any SP. Anyways, I updated to SP1
and remove dns service from my second dns server(the one without icons). No
    luck.

I try to copy from one server to another with same result.

As I mentioned previously, when I click on the computer name on the top
level on the left side (second domain controller), I can see that on the
    right panel, it says
my DNS server has not been configured. Additional notes stating that the
root hints and forwarder are part of the configuration.

I will try to dig up the answer.

Hi again, I already had a chance to look at this and discovered what it was
(at least in my tests), if you don't have the answer post back and I'll let
    you know the steps.

This registry Setting is controlled by the following redistry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters\AdminConfigured

When AdminConfigured is set = 0
If you select the DNS server using DNS console snapin in the right pane the
the Icons for Root Hints and Forwarders won't be available, instead you have
a message that tells you to configure a new Zone, that's the default message
when we install the DNS server but never configured any zone, but if you
configure a new zone that message will desapear and the Root Hints and
Forwarders will be visible, at this point the AdminConfigured is set = 1

To test this settings for 0 and 1 you need to restart the dns service each
time you change it to a different number,
then open and close the DNS console to see the changes.

    Jorge,

Thanks again for your help. I will give it a try. Like I said in the
previous posts, all I did was installed DNS and promoted that server to a DC.

This is more of a cosmetic thing I guess.
