I am trying add a windoiws 2003 SP1 serevr to an existing windows 2000 server
    based single DC network.
I have successfully run the adprep/forestprep and adprep/domainprep on the
    windows 2000 server.
When I use DCPROMO at the windows 2003 server and try to join to the windows
2000 based domain as an additional domain controller I am getting the error
    message as follows.

    The operation failed because:
The attempt to join this computer to the xxxx.com domani failed.
the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
    fashion.

I couldn't see ant entry in the event log.
Windows 2000 server is running on native mode. service pack 4.

DCPROMO log shows the following error message:

The attempt to join this computer to the XXXX.com domain failed.

"The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
    fashion."
dcpromoui 3B8.920 02EF Enter State::GetFailureMessage The operation failed
    because:

The attempt to join this computer to the XXXX.com domain failed.

"The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
    fashion."
dcpromoui 3B8.920 02F0 MessageBox: Error Joining Domain : The operation
    failed because:

The attempt to join this computer to the XXXX.com domain failed.

"The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
    fashion."

  2. Hello mithusur,

try to join the new server to the domain manually prior to running dcpromo,
also run a "dcdiag /v" on your existing DCs to verify they are happy prior
    to adding the new DC.

Also don't forget to run adprep /domainprep /gpprep before upgrading your
domain to 2003... You MUST do this with Service pack 1.
