I have a new dell inspiron 6000 note book with media center edition 2005.

I want to watch tv in my laptop and convert my old video casettes to dvd's.I
    have a dvd burner installed.
I am confused. Is tv tuner and personal video recorder the same? there is
also a mention about video capturing device.is it the same as tv tuner.

happage wintv-pvr -usb2 is it a tv tuner?

    what are the options available?

my purpose is only 2 fold.watch tv and convert video

    advice is welcome

  2. A tv tuner is a piece of hardware, while a PVR is more like a piece of
software that uses the tv tuner (and your other hardware) to act as a vcr.

The Hauppauge PVR-USB tuner is (last I checked) the only external tuner that
    works in the US.

Your tuner can act as a video capture device, but there's some caveats.
First off, Media Center expects your tuner to act either as a tuner, or a
capture device. It's difficult to switch between them, as each time you
switch from capture to tuner, you'll need to tell it your zip code & cable
provider and redownload the tv guide. Another caveat is that Media Center
will (probably, last I checked) recognize the video tape's copy protection
    and refuse to record it.

I solved the problem of converting hundreds of my kids VHS tapes by buying a
standalone DVD recorder at Radio Shack ($59, on sale last Black Friday),
plus something called a Video Clarifier ($89, www.facetvideo.com) that
removes the copy protection from the vertical blanking interval on VHS
    tapes. Works great now...

    thanks for the response.

I am totally confused.I was about to buy happage last week end.your
mail has put a block to that decsion.

You got to help me.I have heard about the stand alone dvd recorder.

If happage,as you say,is not good for media center what is the
    alternative?

I got to watch tv since i am in direct conflict with my 8 year lold grandson
who insists on watching tv while i watch sun tv.
if as you say a tv tuner can do the job which one i should buy.

do you advice me to separate the 2 requests-watching tv and recording?

soryy i am rambling since i am confused

    help

  4. Well, the Hauppauge is a good tuner, I use them (although I don't have their
USB model yet). If you're recording live TV, then Media Center is the way to
go. But (in my opinion, at least) Media Center is not the preferred solution
if you want to copy video tapes to DVD.
