I needed to download a full update to burn to CD. I did not need to
install on my computer but fix a friends who got a virus. Now,
everytime I reboot my system, I'm prompted with the EULA install for
that download. I've tried selecting "I do not accecpt" and even
started the install. When it gets to "the software you are installing
is older..." part I select Cancel. How do I get rid of this?

Does Windows Update use a local file or write to the registry?

    TIA!

Sorry it took so long to reply. I was out of town. It is IE6 Service
    Pack 1.

  4. Problem solved!

    There was a shortcut under C:\Documents & Settings\user\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup\ named "Resume Windows Update Setup
    Installation.lnk". This was a shortcut to ie6setup.exe. I deleted
this file (lnk) and my problem went away.

Still, I'm curious as to why Windows did not delete this file when I
    chose not to install.
