    The update for Agere Systems - Modems - Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem keeps
    popping up on my machine and it always fails. Can anyone offer any
    suggestions??

    I keep getting the same thing. Started today. I am gonna cross post over to
    WindowsXP.Help_and_support and see if anyone bytes over there.

    Micky --

    Same problem yesterday. Select "custom" install and, if you decline to
    install the driver (which won't install on my machine either), you will be
    given the opportunity to permanently reject the update. That leaves the
    "how do I get the update to install" question unaddressed. I presume that an
    update is available from the computer manufacturer (in my case HP/Compaq).

    It really annoys me off when I see these lame 3rd-party
    hardware drivers offered by Windows Update as "High Priority"
    updates. I recommend that you never install such things.
    They seem to cause more problems than they solve. At least
    that's been my observation.

    Clarification: Don't install them unless they claim to
    solve a specific problem that you've been experiencing.
