    Hello all and Happy Halloween!!

Looks like I have some strange gremlins in my Small Business Server today!

We are running SBS2003 Premium at 3 separate sites. At ONLY one of our
sites I am receiving this error when I go to various screens in the Standard
    Management console.

ERROR: "an error has occurred in the script on this page"
    Line: 299
    Char: 4
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method
    Code: 0
    URL: -mmc (this info varies)

So for example I will click on Users, Client Comptuers, Servers in the
Management console and this error comes up. This is causing problems because
I can not do an Offer Remote Assistance for users.

I also receive a similar error when going into SERVICES.

Any ideas what might be causing this? I am the only one with access to the
server and the only recent changes done were the October security updates. I
also applied those updates at our other two sites and they are experiencing
    no problems.

Look forward to any suggestions you might have.

Thank you so much in advance!

    Hi Tammy,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

Based on my research, this problem may occur when some DCOM permission
settings are not configured properly. It is also possible that some IE
files are not registered properly. Let us perform the following steps to
    check this issue again:

    Suggestion 1: Check DCOM setting
    ---------------------------------
Let us perform the following steps to check the DCOM permission. It is
possible that the security setting was changed by an update which caused
    these issues.

    1. Click Start, click Run, type dcomcnfg, and then click OK.
    2. Click the Default Security tab.
    3. In the Default Access Permissions box, click Edit Default.
    4. Verify that both System and Interactive are listed with Allow Access. If
either are missing, add them by clicking Add.
    5. In the List Names From box, make sure that the local computer name is
    listed.
    6. Set Type of Access to Allow Access.
    7. Click the account that is missing, and then click Add.
    8. Repeat Step 7 if both accounts are missing.
    9. Click OK, click OK, and then click OK again.

For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge
    Base article:

274696 Actions such as search and drag and drop do not work because the
    default
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=274696

    Suggestion 2: Re-register dlls
    -----------------------------
If this problem continues, it is possible that some Internet Explorer
related files are corrupt. Let us perform the following steps to
    re-registry them:

    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type "regsvr32 <filename>" (without the quotation
marks), where <filename> is one of the following file names, and then click
    OK:

    - Shdocvw.dll
    - Msjava.dll
    - Urlmon.dll
    - Mshtml.dll
    - Browseui.dll
    - vbscript.dll
    - jscript.dll

    3. When you receive a message that states that registration succeeded,
    click OK.
    4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to register each of the files that are listed
    in step 2.

Does it work now? If this problem continues, please help me collect some
information so that I can perform further research on this issue:

    1. Do you access the Standard Management using Administrator account?
    2. Does the situation occur on all the node of Standard Management?
    3. Does the situation occur on Advanced Management?
    4. Are there any error messages in event log?
    5. Can you attach a screen shot to newsgroup?

Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Best regards,

    Hello Crina,

Thank you very much for responding to my query. To now respond to your
    suggestions/info.

    SUGGESTION 1:
    =============
I checked the DCOM settings, went into dcomcnfg, went to Component Services,
Computers and went into the properties for My Computer. Went to the Default
COM Security tab and below Access Permissions went into EDIT DEFAULT. I have
to users listed – SELF & SYSTEM. I compared these settings to the other two
SBS servers at our other locations and they have the same permissions. I
still went ahead and add INTERACTIVE, as per the notes below, but the problem
    still persists.

    SUGGESTION 2:
    =============
Ran the steps below for each .dll file – the only one that failed was the
msjava.dll file – “the specified module could not be foundâ€. Unfortunately
    the problem still persists.

So now to answer your other queries since the problem still exists.

    1. Do you access the Standard Management using Administrator account?

Yes, I am logging in as myself and my account is a member of the Domain
Admins group. Something interesting that I just noticed. I logged in as
“administrator†just to confirm that I am still receiving the error and I do,
for example, when viewing the CLIENTS COMPUTERS in Standard Management,
however the error is different. This is the error I receive when logged in
    as “administratorâ€:

A runtime error has occurred. Do you wish to debug?
    Line: 298
Error: Object doesn’t support this property or method.

Just thought you’d want to know this in case it helps.

    2. Does the situation occur on all the node of Standard Management?

I just went through the nodes and it happens in every node under Standard
Management except for To Do List and Information Center.

    3. Does the situation occur on Advanced Management?

Yes, it happens at the root of Advanced Management and in every node.

    4. Are there any error messages in event log?

Actually had a look in there to see if there were any errors when doing this
and there are no errors at all to help out with this. ïŒ

    5. Can you attach a screen shot to newsgroup? I can certainly do that for
you…never done before so will figure out how to do it…or perhaps you can
    quickly tell me how. ïŠ

Look forward to anymore suggestions you might have.

Thank you again for much for your assistance with this.

    Hi Tammy,

    Thanks for your reply.

To narrow down the problem, please try to open http://SBSServer/monitoring
on the client workstation to see how thing goes.

For SERVICES issue, do you mean you Run Services.msc and you receive the
    error?

You can send the screen shot of problematic Server management and SERVICES
    to me at .

Thanks for your time and I look forward to your reply.

    Hello again Crina,

Okay, I went to http://SBSServer/monitoring on a client workstation and a
prompt came up to Create Your Server Usage Report. I selected both options –
basic and extended – and the report appeared just fine.

For the SERVICES, the error occurs when I do a Run/Services or try to access
    it via Server Management.

I have emailed you two screen shots – one from Server Management and one
when going into SERVICES. Hopefully these will help.

Look forward to hearing back from you.

    Thank you again!

    Hi Tammy,

    Thanks for your reply.

Please try to run dsa.msc to see how things go. Also please try the
    following:

    1. At a command prompt, type "regsvr32 msxml3.dll" without quotes.
    2. Do as following:

    1) Click Start, Run and enter CMD, then click OK.
    2) Enter NET STOP HELPSVC and press Enter.
    3) Enter CD \WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\PackageStore and press Enter.
    4) Enter DIR *.CAB and press Enter. Note if any CAB files are found.
    5) Enter CD .. and press Enter.
If you had any CAB files in the PackageStore Directory continue with Step
    6. If not, skip to step 7.

    6) Enter REN PackageStore PackageStoreOld and press Enter.
    7) Enter CD BINARIES and press Enter.
    8) Enter START /W HELPSVC /SVCHOST NETSVCS /REGSERVER /INSTALL and press
    Enter.

If the MMC components (Services, GPEDIT, etc.) and Help and Support work,
then you can delete the PackageStoreOld folder.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Best regards,

    | Hello again Crina,
    |
    | Okay, I went to http://SBSServer/monitoring on a client workstation and a
    | prompt came up to Create Your Server Usage Report. I selected both
    options –
    | basic and extended – and the report appeared just fine.
    |
    | For the SERVICES, the error occurs when I do a Run/Services or try to
    access
    | it via Server Management.
    |
    | I have emailed you two screen shots – one from Server Management and
    one
    | when going into SERVICES. Hopefully these will help.
    |
    | Look forward to hearing back from you.
    |
    | Thank you again!

    Hello again Crina,

Okay, I ran dsa.msc and there are no errors.

I then ran the steps below (note: there were no *.CAB files) and
unfortunately the problem is still occurring in Server Management, Services
and Help and Support. I had not noticed the same problem in Help and Support
but it definitely does not appear as it should.

    Sorry - back at ya!

    Thanks again!
    Tammy :)

    Hello again Crina,

Okay, I followed your steps below and unfortunately the problem is still
    occurring.

Just one thing to point out....

When I click on Start/Search nothing comes up – very strange!!?? If I go
into Windows Explorer and right click on C:\ and select Search nothing
happens. If I click on the SEARCH button on the toolbar while in Explorer
that works. I was able to delete all the Cookies.

    Followed the remaining steps successfully.

Sorry but back at you for more suggestions.

    Thank you again,
    Tammy

    Hi Tammy,

    Thanks for your reply.

Let us try to solve the Help and Support issue firstly. Please check if
Registry Keys that are required for Help and Support have missed:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{FC7D9000-3F9E-11D3-93C0-00C04F7

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved.
Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Note: please perform backup before you done any modification.

You can try to export and save the registry keys from a known good system
and then import them into the system that is experiencing the issue. I also
list the registry value for your reference:

You can add this manually or import it into the system registry. Note: some
of the registry entries are patch specific and may need to be edited for

    Hi Tammy,

    Thanks for your reply.

Due to the complexity of this issue, we are unable to assist with this
request in newsgroup. To save your time, you may need to contact CSS for
    better support.

A suggestion would be to contact Microsoft Product Support Services via
telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist with your
request. Please be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged
call. However, if you are simply requesting a hotfix be sent to you and no
other support then charges are usually refunded or waived.

To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a
look at the web site listed below.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS

If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for
    regional support phone numbers.

Thanks for your understanding and I look forward to your reply.

    Best regards,

    Crina Li (MSFT)

    =====================================================
This newsgroup only focuses on SBS technical issues. If you have issues
regarding other Microsoft products, you'd better post in the corresponding
newsgroups so that they can be resolved in an efficient and timely manner.
You can locate the newsgroup here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx

When opening a new thread via the web interface, we recommend you check the
"Notify me of replies" box to receive e-mail notifications when there are
any updates in your thread. When responding to posts via your newsreader,
please "Reply to Group" so that others may learn and benefit from your
    issue.

Microsoft engineers can only focus on one issue per thread. Although we
provide other information for your reference, we recommend you post
different incidents in different threads to keep the thread clean. In doing
so, it will ensure your issues are resolved in a timely manner.

For urgent issues, you may want to contact Microsoft CSS directly. Please
check http://support.microsoft.com for regional support phone numbers.

Any input or comments in this thread are highly appreciated.

    Hello Crina,

I agree and even before you replied I figured that the time had come for me
to contact Microsoft Tech Support. No worries! :) I've had to contact CSS
via phone and email in the past and it has worked out great and was well
    worth the expense.

I truly appreciate your efforts and time in trying to assist me with this
issue. If you like I can let you know what the problem ended up being - just
    let me know.

    Thank you again! :)
    Tammy

    Hi Tammy,

    Thanks for your reply.

I am glad to hear the problem is resolved.

If you would, please share the solution in the newsgroup, so other persons
who have the same issue will get some clue from it. Thanks again for your
time and efforts on the issue.

It is my pleasure to work with you in this post. If you encounter any
difficulties in the future, please submit the post to the newsgroup. We
are glad to be of the assistance.

Again, thank you for using Microsoft newsgroup. Have a nice day. :)

    Best regards,

    Crina Li (MSFT)

    Microsoft CSS Online Newsgroup Support

    =====================================================

    Hi Tammy,

I have been having some problems with my MMC that mirror the issue you were
dealing with on the forums a couple of months ago. I was wondering what the
resolution was eventually as I do not want to have to go through a machine
rebuild. I truly appreciate any help you can provide.

    Thanks,

    Jon

    Hello Jon,

I finally did resolve this problem with Microsoft's assistance and I
included the steps below. I tried each step and made note of the one that
finally worked for me...but I would suggest going through them one at a time
    first.

    Hope this helps! :)

    SOLUTION
    =======

Test the issue under another user account (**NOTE: THIS STEP DID NOT
    CHANGE ANYTHING FOR ME)
    -----------------------------------------------
Please create a new user account with the Administrator privilege, log on
with it and see whether the script/Search issue still occurs under the new
    user account.

Verify that Active Scripting, ActiveX, and Java are not blocked (**NOTE:
THIS STEP DID NOT CHANGE ANYTHING FOR ME)
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    1. Start Internet Explorer.
    2. On the "Tools" menu, click "Internet Options".
    3. In the "Internet Options" dialog box, click "Security".
    4. Click on each zone and click "Default Level" if this button is not gray.
    5. Click on each zone and click "Custom Level" and make sure that the
    following items are enabled:
    File Download
Run Active X controls and plug-ins
    Active Scripting
Launching applications and files in an IFRAME
    6. Please also make sure that Java Permissions is set to "Medium safety".
(NOTE: The Java permission option only appears when Microsoft VM is installed)

Reregister the following ".dll" files (**NOTE: THIS STEP DID NOT CHANGE
    ANYTHING FOR ME)
    ----------------------------------------
    1. Close all the Internet Explorer instances.
    2. Click Start and Run, type "regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\vbscript.dll"
(without the quotation marks) in the Open box and click OK.
    3. Use the same method to run the commands below:
    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\jscript.dll
    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msxml.dll
    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\shdocvw.dll
    4. Restart your computer and try again.

Add some keys to the registry (**NOTE: IT WAS THIS STEP THAT FINALLY
    WORKED FOR ME)
    ----------------------------------
    1. Click Start, click Run, type Notepad.exe, and then click OK.
    2. Paste the following text in the Notepad document:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
    @="ClassMoniker
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\InprocServer32]
    @="ole32.dll"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProgID]
    @="clsid"
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\CLSID]
    @="{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"

    3. Click File, and then click Save.
    4. In the Save in box, click Desktop.
    5. In the File name box, type registry.reg.
    6. In the Save as type box, click All Files, and then click Save.
    7. Click File, and then click Exit.
    8. On the desktop, double-click registry.reg, and then click Yes to add the
    information to the registry.
    9. Click OK to confirm that the information in the registry.reg file has
    been added to the registry.
    10. Restart the computer.
