well I learned something today, read carefully.
What should have been a pretty straight forward install of a SBS server
has turned into a bit of a nightmare.
Server is fine, everything done off site and good. All that was required
to complete the job was upgrade the two vista home machines to ultimate
to allow them to be joined to the domain. I went onlne and purchased it
etc then got the confirmation email so went ahead and did the upgrade. I
failed to spot the bit in the email about having to download a file to
do the license upgrade. Upgrade completed, vista now shows 3 days until
automatic activation. Trying to run the file that I subsequently
downloaded tells me it won't work with this copy of windows as by
running the anytime upgrade without doing the other procedure first
installs a full version not an upgrade ?
According to MS tech support my only option is to roll back the machine
to home premium and start again. I'm currently backing that PC up and
also kicking myself. If this saves one you some grief then great, I
still can't believe I did it.
