Let me try again as the last attempt at a post went in flames! I have a
Radeon X1600 Pro PCI=e 512MB and have not been able to run Normal mode
without first uninstalling the 2 instances of the graphics card in safe mode
and booting again to let PNP install the card. I have tried all the
suggestions given here up to 7/1/06 except for installing the latest XP
Catalyst as that is not a WDDM driver. I have installed the beta Catalyst and
on reboot I get the BSOD about timeouts related to the video. I would really
like to explore the X64 Vista but so far no dice. Any help or solutions?

I assume you set the video related BIOS values to default.

Did you consult the ATI support knowledge base? E.g., you find there a
guide how to deinstall old ATI software and drivers,

Does your motherboard have a VIA chipset? Incompatibilities with
    Radeon cards have been reported...

I had no problem in installing Vista Beta 2 x64 on an Asus K8N-E dlx
with a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB.

If it's important to you, perhaps you may try another card - e.g. a
cheap GeForce FX 5200 (with real) 128 MB RAM or a GeForce 6200 (with
real) 128 or 256 MB RAM.

    Hi Roy,

    I am using a Intel D945PVS systemboard so I don't thinik I have a VIA
chipset problem :). The install was a clean install as x64 does not do an
update so there are no old ATI drivers to remove. I did try installing the
beta catalyst pacakage and it did go through a complete install but on reboot
BSOD. Thanks for your suggestions and efforts.

The ATI drivers for Vista RC1 is a real sorrow for my Radeon X1600 Pro 512
MB graphics RAM AGP 8x, too. It gives 4 bit color horizontal stripes during
booting such that I cannot see anything on screen. After waiting a couple of
minutes I type in my password blindly and press enter. I then see the
desktop. But I cannot open Control Panel nor Device Manager to uninstall the
ATI drivers. ATI drivers never let me do it, ironic enough. Now I run on MS
supplied drivers that come with Vista.

Funny, I read over the internet that ATI has WHQL certified drivers.

Oh then news gets better! Hope ATI is sending out a corrected driver quick.
I haven't got my RC1 disk yet but it is on the way. Guess I will watch to
see if this gets corrected before removeing 32bit Beta2 for a what sounds
    like step backwards.

I have had a whole world of problems with my AGP Radeon x1600 pro 512mb on 32
bit vista 5728, all using ATI's own vista RC1 driver. I have had corrupted
graphics galore and managed to sort it by using the bundled WDM driver made
by microsoft it seems to work ok with glass aero effects but games run like
poo compared to XP and 3dmark01 looses a whole 3000 3dmarks on vista compared
    to XP
