Attempting to uninstall 7.0 Beta 2 so Beta 3 can be installed resultsin Access Denied error

Discussion in 'Internet Explorer' started by Will Pittenger, Jul 2, 2006.

  1. I downloaded 7.0 beta 3. The instructions said to uninstall previous
7.0 betas prior to installing the new beta. So I attempted to so. It
was almost done with copying the files when it issued an error with no
    details.

How do I move to the new beta if the old one will not uninstall? I
tried it in my Administrator account even though I have full Admin
rights with this account. There, I was told to use the account that I
installed it with. First, the Administrator should be able to uninstall
anyone's program on that computer. Second, I was back where I started
as I installed Beta 2 with the first account.

Please examine the image below for details.

  4. I never found anything you suggested useful. So I still scratching my
head on the matter. Now I notice that when I run IE, I get IE 6. So I
attempted to install IE 7 Beta 3 thinking the uninstall worked.
However, it refused (and made me reboot) to install.

Now I see that URL files are broken. The URL page in the properties
window is missing. The icon is a blank file icon. Nothing happens when
    I click them.

  5. Go to Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs
Make sure Show Updates is checked.
Scroll down near the bottom and find IE7 and remove it. It will restore IE6.

If it isn't there go to Start | Run and type the proper one of these
    commands:

    %windiw%\ie7beta3\spininst\spuninst.exe (Beta 3)

    %windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2$\spuninst\spuninst.exe (IE7 Beta2, build
    5346.5)

    %windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.exe (IE7 Beta2 Preview)

If it still doesn't work go to Start | Run and type
    regedit
    and press <Enter>
    Navigate to the key
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
    Click on Internet Explorer.
Right click in the right pane and select New String Value .
    Name that value
    InstalledByUser
Right click the new value and choose Modify and give it your User Account
    name
Now try to Uninstall IE7 via Add or Remove Programs.

Some software (for example CCleaner) deletes uninstaller directories such as
    $NtUninstallie7bet2$ (or $NtUninstallie7bet2p$, for IE& Beta2 Preview).
If the $NtUninstallie7bet2$ folder is empty, or has been deleted completely,
whether by third party software or manually to preserve disk space, you will
not be able to remove the Beta 2 Preview via Add/Remove Programs or the
commandline. If running System Restore does not resolve the situation for
you, then your only choice is to stay with the Preview, or format your PC
and install Windows anew. You will not be able to install any future builds
of IE7 while Beta 2 Preview is installed, nor will you be able to run a
    Repair Install of XP
