When trying to play a wav file in WM9 I get this error.

"The audio codec identified by the format tag 7 is
required to play this file. To determine if this codec is
available to download from the Web, click Web Help."

Anyone that could help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't recall what formattag 7 maps out to be. Is there a pointer to an
    afflicted file?

That was all the info. I get a web help button and when I
try it it cannot find the codec.

That's part of the base Windows codecs. Since you don't mention what OS
you're on, I wouldn't know how to reinstall them on that OS.

Ugh. I don't know if there's way to reinstall that codec there, since I
think OCM got rid of the codec reinstall option. It doesn't help that I
don't think I've ever intentionally played a Mulaw file, so don't know what
    codec it comes out of.
Under the Sounds and Audio Devices, you should be able to get a codec
list... I don't know which pane on W2K, since I'm all on Windows XP.

This isn't an error in WMP really, so actual technical support can address
this better than random people around here.
