audio frequently interrupted by some kind of noise or chop

After replacing a Linksys with a DLINK we can now add audio to our family
video/audio conversation. The problem we frequently experience however is a
audio interruption with a "di di di di di di di di di di di di di di di di
di di di di di di di di di di di di di di di di di di di di di" sound where
we can't talk until the interruption goes away.. Only once our video
actually became delayed.. otherwise the video is unaffected (Logitech
    QuickCam Pro 4000)

Thankfully the codec eventually eliminates the unwanted noise. I can't tell
    what triggers it.
Both ends are on COX broadband and thankfully in the same state.. ping time
between endpoints is roughly 30 ms. Both stations are Windows XP home Ed.,
on Pentium III 900 or better with a 384 MB RAM.

Any theories on what could be wrong? I have not performed a ping during the
entire video conference to see if it's a temporary bandwidth problem or if
it's the audio codec having problems in general (with regenerative
    feedback)..
