I am running a pure Windows 2003 server network. All of my clients are running Windows XP. We use Microsoft ISA as our firewall.

When I go to a client and run Windows Updates, there are no problems, all runs well.

When I setup the Automatic settings the client never receives updates again. I check the "Windows Update.log" file and there is absolutely nothing recorded in there since the time and date that I manually ran the update. It's like the client doesn't even try to connect for updates.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am having the same problem. The only thing that I have
found so far is that the Automatic Update service is not
running and gives me an error of 1053. Can't find
anything relevant on this. The Updates work fine on
Win2K. There must be something in XP that is creating
    the problem.

Please let me know if you find anything.

    Thanks,

Check the System Event logs in the Event Viewer for source "Automatic Update" . Any errors reported?

A couple things to keep in mind.

    1) Automatic Update runs using the Local System account

    2) The Automatic Update client will attempt to find a WPAD.DAT using the DHCP

Inform packets. This will be the Automatic Proxy Configuration Script that

Automatic Update will use for the connection.

    3) The Automatic Update client will attempt a Direct Connect if the WPAD.DAT is not found.
