The notifications that both Jeff and Richard saw were about programs wanting
to accept incoming connections. The screenshot that Jeff attached quite
clearly indicates incoming. I have seen the same dialogue pop up too.
Programs that want to accept incoming connections (such as IM programs) will
make Windows Firewall pop up a warning box, unless it has already been
granted permission in the exceptions tab. Programs sending outbound
connections do not. The standard default Windows Firewall only notifies of
incoming, as does the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

FWIW, I don't dismiss anything that Richard says ;) That was not my
    intention.

Ok, I think Everbody is missing the point of the original post. This
thread, (from what I gather,) was originally asking for a list of compatible
FWs and AV programs for Vista. My question is this, how come everybody, and
I mean EVERBODY, starts turning these discussion groups into a debate over
the pluses and minuses of Vista? Firewall or otherwise? The original poster
of this thread was asking a straight forward question, not asking for a
debate. A Lot of people don't trust or don't like Microsoft security
applications, that's their business. How about we as fellow users respect
those opinions and just answer the question that's asked. Stop trying to
convince or turn people away from vista.

I personally was looking at this thread because I had the same question. I
Wasn't interested in a debate, I just wanted to know what works with VIsta.
Can someone please post a list or something somewhere, or point me in the
direction of said list so I don't have to keep reading through dozens of
posts over the merits of the OS. you don't need to convince me that it's
    good. I'm already using it aren't I?
    regards to all,
    Jordan H.
