Backup Utility Does Not Run Scheduled Backups to Network Drive

Discussion in 'Windows Server' started by Alan Auerbach, Aug 30, 2009.

  1. Until recently, the Backup Utility ran scheduled backups to a mapped network
drive without problems. Very recently (within about a week) that stopped. I
am able to run manual backups to the same location, but the scheduled
backups all yield the same report:

    Backup Status
The operation was not performed because the specified media cannot be
    found.

My logon for the computer is Administrator
The scheduled task is setup to run under POOLTHING\Administrator (POOLTHING
    is the domain name)
The comnmand line for the task is

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Documents and
    Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
    NT\NTBackup\data\Weekly Full.bks" /n "ServerBackup.bkf created 8/29/2009 at
    9:35 AM" /d "Set created 8/29/2009 at 9:35 AM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:eek:ff
    /m normal /j "Weekly Full" /l:s /f "P:\ServerBackup.bkf"

I could only find two files under:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
    Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\

for yesterday when the last attempt was made:

    Weekly Full.bks
    Weekly Full

Neither file is readable with Wordpad

This is all the information I have other than that the mapped network drive
(p:) is oeprating properly and the file ServerBackup.bkf can be fully
    accessed manually from the server.

    Thank you in advance,
    /s/ Alan Auerbach

  2. Welcome back - it appears that you found a better newsgroup. I will add my
    comments in-line.

*** I assume that P: is a mapped drive. Mapped drives are
*** specific to each logon instance. When the Task Scheduler
*** launches your backup job then drive P: won't exist, unless
*** you map it before launching ntbackup.exe or unless you
*** have an active foreground session under "Administrator"
*** that mapped it. Use UNC coding to get around this issue.
*** This is the list of files/folders that get backed up. You can
*** read it with notepad.exe. Do not modify it!
    *** This is probably rubbish.
*** yes - but only in the foreground session!

  3. Dear Pegasus,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.

Since the schedule is setup to run as POOLTHING\Administrator (same as the
foreground session) I do not understand the difference. BTW, the behavior is
the same even if I am monitoring the foreground at the time that the
scheduled task is set to run.

I know nothing about UNC coding. Can you help me with that? Is there
something in the mapping that needs to be changed? BTW, this problem only
exists on the server. Running a similar scheduled backup on WinXP Pro
machines has no problems. (I recognize that there are significant
    differences between the operating systems.)

  5. Dear Pegasus,

Thank you so very much for the solution! I understood how to directly
reference a network resource but never knew that it was called UNC. Your
    advice worked perfectly.

I cannot understand why this worked for years and now it does not (probably
due to a recent Microsoft update) but, no matter. I am delighted that it
works and I am very grateful to you for your generous assistance.

    Thank you,
    /s/ Alan Auerbach
