I am pitching my Media Center Extender. After learing it will not play back
HDTV or DVDs and there is not solution on the horizon, I am just going to
    connect my PC directly.

I am pretty informed on video cards, but never really considered anything
    above/beyond standard sound cards.

Any advice on a good 3D, DVD capable sound card? Preferably with DVD audio
and its own CPU (for gaming)?

    Thanks.

Also, and advice for video cards appreciated.

Audigy 2 ZS in mine ok. I had issues with the onboard sound.
Graphics are fine with NVIDIA 5200 (no fan = no noise and it's certified
with BDA drivers) Got one with Svideo, DVI and VGA outputs.

Which onboard sound did you have? I've been told the newer Intel High
Definition sound built into some motherboards is really good.

Whatever POS sound chipset came with my DELL Optiplex GX260.

    Nothing 3D or 5.1.
