Is there anyway without using mstsc I can cause a batch file to run on the
    server- from a remote workstation?

Ya know, something I click on my desktop, and it calls the server and says

Yo, server! You have a batchfile at c:\scripted\process1.bat execute
    it....
bonus points if I can get a confirmation back...

    TIA

have you looked at "at /?". You could schedule a task to run within 2
    minutes...

  3. There is a funny tool out of NT4. It is called "rcmd" (remote command ...).

With this tool u r able to execute something on a different machine (if the
service is installed). It is something like ssh in Linux.

Bonus Point: Make a good script and u will get a confirmation :)). U have
    to program it by yourself
