    Hi all,

    I have one of secondary DC has USN problem after I restore from a image
    backup. I have deomote the secondary DC, but when I performed metadata
    cleanup on the primary DC, I got the following errors:

    Ldap extended error message is 0000208F: NameErr: DSID-031001BA, problem
    2006 (B
    AD_NAME), data 8350, best match of:
    'CN=Ntds Settings,tsprott'

    Win32 error returned is 0x208f(The object name has bad syntax.)
    )
    Unable to determine the domain hosted by the DC (5). Please use the
    connection m
    enu to specify it.
    Disconnecting from localhost...

    Does anyone what I should do? I have found the article
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=839880

    I had verified everything, but I still can not solve the problem.

    Please help me out.

    Thanks,

    Stephen

  2. Can you paste the transcript from ntdsutil from the time you start the
    utility to when you get the error?

    Hi Brain,

    Thank you for your response.

    I run the NTDSutil command on the health PDC.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ntdsutil
    ntdsutil: metadat cleanup
    metadata cleanup: connections
    server connections: connect to server tsprott
    Binding to tsprott ...
    DsBindW error 0x6d9(There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint
    mapp
    er.)
    server connections: connect to server tsprott.fsprott.local
    Binding to tsprott.fsprott.local ...
    DsBindW error 0x6d9(There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint
    mapp
    er.)
    server connections:

    when I try to connect to server, I got the above errors.

    What should I do?

    Thanks,

    Stephen

  5. Brian,

    "No more endpoints" usually refers to RPC, right? And this is usually - but
    not always - DNS or networking related, right? This link might be useful:

    Yes, I did read the article and verified each steps. I aslo add tcpip
    entries, but it does not help me, you may look the following errors:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ntdsutil
    ntdsutil: metadata cleanup
    metadata cleanup: remove selected server server2.gov.local
    Binding to localhost ...
    Connected to localhost using credentials of locally logged on user.
    LDAP error 0x22(34 (Invalid DN Syntax).
    Ldap extended error message is 0000208F: NameErr: DSID-031001BA, problem
    2006 (B
    AD_NAME), data 8350, best match of:
    'CN=Ntds Settings,server2.gov.local'

    Win32 error returned is 0x208f(The object name has bad syntax.)
    )
    Unable to determine the domain hosted by the DC (5). Please use the
    connection m
    enu to specify it.
    Disconnecting from localhost...
    metadata cleanup:

    Is there other reason to cause this problem?

    Please help me out,

    Thanks you all,

  8. Stephen,

    I do not think that you are doing this correctly. You have to first bind
    (read: connect) to an existing Domain Controller in your environment. Once
    you have done this would then remove the "dead" DC...

    Take a look at this MSKB Article for the process on running a metadata
    cleanup...

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498

    Is this EXACTLY what you are doing?

  9. Is tsprott a wokring DC or is that the bad one? You want to connect to a
    working online one.
