I receive an unspecifed error message when trying to save my favorites. How
can I get this rectified. Also, I get error 0000142 from schedtask.exe when I
    log off or shutdown.

Windows version? IE version? Complete error messages?

Windows Vista premium home edition with Internet Explorer 7. Message reads
unable to create "name of site" - unspecified error. The other error message
is oxc (0000142) and seems to have to do with Network access protection.

A1. Please define "when trying to save my favorites" (e.g., save any webpage
in Favorites; save only some webpages in Favorites and if so, which webpages
in particular; saving your list of Favorites, e.g., to import into IE
    elsewhere)?

Also tell us if UAC is enabled when this happens and what, if any, Norton
    application is installed.

    A2. Post this question in a Vista-specific newsgroup (e.g.,
    microsoft.public.windows.vista.performance_maintenance;
    microsoft.public.windows.vista.general).

I found this question in a "Vista specific discussion group". I'm having the
same problem and had hoped to find an answer here.

A1 response: I click on Star+ (Add to Favorites) and try to add the current
website to my Favorites. The exact message described by bit_smart pops up.
I've also found that I can 1) create a new folder in my Favorites and
correctly Add to it; 2) can move my old links (one at a miserable time) to
the new folder and still open them and also add more to this new updated
folder; 3) cannot remove the Read Only flag from the old Favorites folder to
try to be able to Add to it.

My Favoites were "imported" from Win XP. I put that in quoted because the
Import utility would not find the Favoites folder on my old XP disk (I had it
connected directly to my new PC). I had to copy the Favorites folder using
Explore from my old drive to my new laptop drive. I can access (open) all of
the links I tried, but I can't add to this Favorites folder unless I open a
    new folder as described above.

I am having the exact same problem. I can save a favorite into the main
favorite folder but I can't save one into a folder down in the tree. I get a
    unspecified error.

This has gone on of course sense I got vista home premium/ IE 7. It really
    sucks.

Are there any solutions to this?

I just read richlife's post on making new folder and adding to it. I created
a new folder, moved each link, one at a time to the new file, and
successfully added a new favorite from a webpage to it.
It appears I will be able to circumvent the problem if I do this to all my
links, however, I have a lot of them and this is a real dinosaur of a
    solution.

Care to answer my questions? Have you posted your question in one of the
    Vista-specific newsgroups I cited?

The exact same thing happens to me. This just suddenly started yesterday and
I haven't added any new programs or made any other changes. I use Vista Home
Premium and IE 7. Wish there was an easier option than making new folders
and moving each favorite. I have alot of favorites!

    I had the same issue:
    1. could not drag web addresses to my links bar
    2. could not save to favorites etc
I kept getting the same "unspecified error" message.

What seems to have worked for me is to right click the explorer icon (to
start explorer) and then click "run as administrator"

    Things seemed to work "normally".

I closed explorer and then restarted it as I normally would (ie, NOT as "run
as administrator") and so far things seem to work OK.

This is a really annoying little problem. I hope this helps others.

    Lynn Miller,

If you turn off UAC you are asking for problems. It is not a wise thing
to do. You should rethink your solution.

In Windows Vista Home Premium "run as administrator" is grayed out and not
    allowed in IE7.

This is usually caused by moving the Favorites folder from its default
    location.

    And can be corrected thus:

Open a Command Prompt as an administrator.
Browse to the folder that contains your Favorites folder. That means
whichever folder your Favorites folder is in.
Copy this statement, (without the quotes), right click the Command Prompt
window at the prompt, and select paste:
    "icacls favorites /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low"

I have a problem in the fact that not only can i NOT save any links in
favorites but my favorites list is moved , seems it has created a folder
elsewhere in downloads, the drop down is completely empty and the error
message i get tells me its moved or missing. Once I located the folder in my
computer>downloads, i tried to fix the problem and it seems there isn't a
laymans way to get around it.. HELP
