Can't add media files from shared folder over network

Discussion in 'Windows Media Center' started by Robbie Sinclair, Feb 10, 2006.

  1. I'm a new MCE user, and I'm having trouble getting my Media Center PC to add
files located in Shared folders on another XP machine.

Both machines are on the same network (I reran the Network Setup Wizard to
confirm they're in the same Workgroup) and I can browse to either machine
from the other via Network Places and physically SEE the files I want.

But when I launch Media Center and attempt to add media (Music, Pictures and
Videos all have the same problem) it reports almost instantly that it cannot
find any PCs on the network with shared folders.

I've triple-checked the folders on the XP machine to make sure they are
Shared (and I'm just using the default My Music, My Pictures, My Videos
folders) but the MCE machine cannot see them.

What else should I be doing?

  2. It might help to try this: in Windows Explorer, click on the plus sing
to open My Network Places, then Entire Network, then Microsoft Windows
Network, then the computer you wish to connect to.

Right click on the shared folder icon and select Map Network Drive from
the dropdown box. Give the folder a drive letter, and try accessing the
drive via that letter (such as K: or whatever you choose).

It's a stab in the dark, but easy enough to try.
