Can't Add to Favorites in Internet Explorer 7 (Vista Home Premium)

Discussion in 'Internet Explorer' started by M H Ruffin, May 20, 2007.

  1. I learned through HP tech support that this problem -- the inability to create favorites in IE under Vista -- results from "integrity control" or some such. Even if you have all the seemingly correct file-level permissions, you still can't modify files/folders if the PROGRAM that you are running has the wrong "integrity" setting.

When IE runs in protected mode, it has "low" integrity, and by default, "low" integrity programs can't modify anything. So IE in protected mode can't modify its own favorites folder! This is incredibly stupid, but here was the solution the HP tech guy gave me:

    1. Open an admin command prompt
    2. navigate to the directory containing your favorites folder (C:\Users\username, unless you have moved it)
    3. Execute this command:

    icacls favorites /setintegritylevel (oi)(ci)low

You should get a confirmation message saying "processed file: favorites" (and then another line saying something like 1 file processed successfully, 0 files unsuccessfully)

    Hope this helps!

Hi, I don't understand when you say right-click on the icon you use to run
the program. Are you referring to the "add to favorites" icon? Because I
tried that and I was not given an option to "run as administrator"

    Hi,
Right-click the IE icon on the desktop and choose "Run as administrator." If
that option isn't present, try IE in the Start> Programs menu or the
    Quicklaunch Bar.

  4. I also have this problem with Vista. Opening Internet Explorer as
Administrator works but you have to set this everytime you launch IE. Is
there no other way to solve the original problem?

Thank you!! After trying to work through several possible solutions, yours
was both easy to follow and fixed the problem.

BHagerty's solution looked pretty easy but with windows Vista, I can't even
figure out how to get to an admin command prompt. Aaaarrrrrgggghhhh! Go
ahead and ask me how much I like Windows Vista - no don't.

I posted to the double star. then go to organize favorites - up they come. Doesn't make sense to me, but it worked. Hope it does the same for you. I am unfortunately on Vista.

Doing an IE7 Reset also makes no difference

I did learn after my first post on this problem that I can add a web site to
Favorites if I just add it to the general Favorites folder, that is, if I
don't try putting it in an existing sub-folder. I can also create a new
sub-folder under Favorites (e.g., Favorites/Alaska Travel) and add web sites
    to it.

But if I try adding a site to any PREVIOUSLY EXISTING sub-folder, I get the
error message and IE7 refuses to allow it. I have tried renaming some of my
old folders under Favorites, then adding new web sites to them, but this
    doesn't work either

    and suggesting this.

FYI, I did find a solution in the post from Gistcheckin, which is to launch
IE7 with a right click of the mouse and select "Run as Administrator." THis
allows me to add web sites to any Favorites folder I choose.

You should check the permissions on the folders you normally cannot add to.

You are using Vista.... things are a little different on Win7<laugh/>

You may not be seeing your new Favorite Internet Shortcut appear in the
Favorites Pane because you already have a long list of Favorites that
    extends past your immediate view.

I posted to the double star? You mean the Add to Favorites Bar button?

Internet Shortcuts are added to the Favorites\Favorites Bar (aka links
folder) root by default. You should see them appear immediately to the right
of the Add to Favorites Bar button.

Tip: You can easily drag and drop Internet Shortcuts from your Favorites Bar
to your Favorites Panel, in whatever sub folder you want (highlight on
hover). Its a lot faster than the Organize Favorites dialog.

    Regards.
