Can't cancel an update in progress

I have a PC with XP home edition, SP1. Until recently, I had automatic
updates disabled, and was prompted when new updates were available. After
one of the hotfixes was installed, it set the updates to install
automatically. Beginning last week, there is a large update (SP2 maybe?)
that is continually downloading to my PC. When I disconnect then reconnect,
it seems to continue from where it left off (according to the Windows Update
icon in the system tray). The problem is, I have a dial up line with a 56k
modem, and it would be nice to have the line free. I cannot cancel this
update. I can right-click every other icon in the system tray and get a
menu, but this one does not. How can I cancel this update???? I have
already set my updates to be prompted when one is available... Any help is
greatly appreciated (I know, I know... get high speed access)

  2. To stop the Automatic Updates service, clear the contents of the DataStore and
Download folders, (if appropriate EventCache) and restart the Automatic Updates
    service

    1. Stop the Automatic Updates Service.
    Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service. Select Properties.
    Under Service status, click Stop.
    Click OK

    2. Now you’ll need to clean out the Download folder for WU5 by deleting the Contents
of the DataStore and Download folders.
    Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution.
    Click OK.
Delete the contents of both the DataStore, (and perhaps the EventCache) and Download
    folders.

You will lose your WUv5 History – not important

    When you’re ready:

In the Run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service. Select Properties.
    Under Service status, click Start.
    Click OK.
