    Hi:

The options on my Windows Updates panel are all greyed out and set to
    automatic (Start|Control Panel|Windows Updates|Automatic Updates).
Since they're locked, I can't go back to manually manage this update
    process.

This topic has appeared in several forums over the past several years.
The registry fix suggested by one of the forum moderators is for
    Windows XP; I've got Windows 2000 SP4.
    (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm -- item 179, right
column, 'Windows Greyed Out - Restore', file updaterestore.reg)

    1. Does anybody yet know what it is that is changing this behavior?

    2. Should I use the XP patch anyway on Window 2000 SP4?

    TIA

  2. Hi,

The registry file at kellys-korner-xp that you refer to applies to
    Windows 2000 as well...

    Torgeri:

OK -- it worked. Thanks for confirming Windows 2000 applicability.
    Great.

Do you have any idea yet how this change to locked status occurred? It
seems to go back a way.

    TIA

  4. Hi,

I know that e.g. some worms/viruses disables Automatic Updates, but
if that is the case for you, I don't know.
