On CD #8 of the SBS 2003 Premium R2 install, there's an option to install
    Windows SBS 2003 R2.

What exactly will this option install (beside the WSUS)? I mean what are
all the software the R2 will install and how will it benefit me. If there's
just the WSUS, please let me know. Thank you.

  2. You want it.

    MMC 3.
New server performance reports that integrate SBS Update Services status
reporting (and, a more useful overall layout).
    SBS Update Services managment node.
    Branding.

There could be other stuff as well.

Is there an option for me not to install the WSUS?

  4. Hi Andy,

Yes, I think the option to not use WSUS is there.

But, what's the reason for not using it?

Les, thanks. I heard it's a resource hog and therefore I am not installing
it. There are only 6 nodes on the whole device so the manual updates is okay
    by us. Any suggestions?

  6. You don't have to use it. Any more than 1 workstation and I'd use it though.

There are some issues with WSUS v2, but generally not server side issues
(other than the disk storage resouces it needs). The issues are generally
high CPU and or memory use (svchost.exe) on workstations, especially if
they're sub-powered boxes (celeron, less than 512 mb RAM, and with a full
load of Office apps). Those are all contributory factors.

There is an msi.dll update for the svchost issue that's corrected the
workstation issues in all cases, for me, but I understand that it's not done
    the job for some.

I will say that I'm now using WSUS v3 RC in conjunction with SBS Update
Services, and with a Vista test box workstation, and I really like what I
see. Apparently the WSUS client bits are all new, and the svchost issues are
supposed to be fixed with that.

So, if you're not using WSUS v2 you may be excused (but I still think it's
worth it) that's fine, but you may want to seriously consider the R2 SBS
Update Services bits, with WSUS V3 over top, when it releases.
