CF and other card readers disappear from My Computer

    After inserting a compact flash card into my computer's card reader, all TEAC
    USB devices immediately disappear from Windows Explorer and I cannot find any
    of them again. Only after rebooting my computer, the drives appear again.
    However with little use, since there is no way to directly download pictures
    from my CF onto my computer; to do so I need to connect my camera to the
    computer and use a USB cable.
    Has anyone an idea what might be wrong?
