My computer just sits and then freezes with this message
when I attempt to do a windows update.

I did try the notation from dak from the thread
"Freezing on checking......." but it did not make any difference although
    the symptoms are the same.
    Help would be appreciated

    Hi,

Are you using Zone Alarm as a firewall? If so, you will need to adjust
the settings on that to allow ActiveX controls and to set the MS sites
    as Exceptions ("*.microsoft.com" and "*.windowsupdate.com").

You should also install the latest update to the MS scripting files if
you haven't done that lately. You can download the update here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

Beyond that, please check the WindowsUpdate.LOG file in your Windows
folder and report the error codes listed there for your most recent
    session.

I thank you for your suggestions. I am out of my office
until the end of next week and the computer that is giving
me the update problem is there.

I will try you suggestions towards the end of next week and
    report back.

Once again, thank you for the suggestions.
