Checking for the latest updates for your computer

When performing a Microsoft Update on a Windows XP Sp2 computer with IE7,
after clicking on either the custom or express button, I can't get past the
"Checking for the latest updates for your computer" message with the green
bar scrolling across the screen. I haven’t let it go past an hour without
stopping it, but I don’t get any error messages during this time.

This may be unrelated, but on the same computer when I try to shut down a
pop up appears and notifies me it is installing an update. This is strange
because I did not choose the "install and shut down†option. Anyways it
hangs there and never shuts down.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Apparently same trouble was caused by trying to do manual check for optional
updates with automatic updates set on. Turns out there are 10 megs or so of
automatic updates to do after upgrading to IE7 and the update contol is
invisibly busy and will not respond until the automatic stuff is finished.
