"Click to activate and use this control"

I am using Windows XP SP2. Since the last Windows Update, I have just
suddenly started to notice that when I am on an "active" website (ie, NJ
Lottery), when I move my cursor over an active area, the area becomes
highlighted, and the cursor turns into a hand, and a pop up box directs me to
"click to activate and use this control." For the life of me, I cannot recall
seeing this message on so many websites, so now I am convinced it happened
during the April 11th update. I have tried to "system restore" to get the
system back to a time before I recognized this happening, but the system is
unable to get back to any recent restore points, saying that the computer has
not changed -- even though I did successfully update it automatically last
    night.

This is not keeping me from clicking on web site buttons or anything - it's
just a strange thing that happened. I realize it is more annoying and not so
much a thing that will prevent my using my computer, but I am hoping someone
out there may have a fix for me!

    Thanks.

I don't really understand. I'm sorry. I'm not sure I understand what you were
trying to tell me by saying "MS06-013 made it so. Is this a bad thing?

  6. Hi,

This change was applied to your computer when you installed the
KB912812 update (MS06-013: Cumulative Security Update for Internet
    Explorer, released April 2006).

Microsoft had to do this to to be in compliance with the Eolas
Technologies patent verdict, more about this here:
    http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1932304,00.asp?kc=EWRSS03119TX1K0000594

To "undo" this effect, you can install the KB917425 update ("Internet
Explorer ActiveX compatibility patch"). More information and download
link for KB917425 is to be found here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917425

Note that Microsoft have planned an IE Cumulative security update in
June 2006 that will overwrite and disable this ActiveX compatibility
    patch.

    Regards,
    Torgeir

    Wow,
thank you SO much for the helpful information. I believe I will wait until
the June 2006 update -- it's not as though the current setup keeps me from
using the websites I mentioned. I'm glad it's not just me and I'm so relieved
I don't have to spend hours on the phone with tech assistance.

"....it's not as though the current setup keeps me from using the
    websites..."

It doesn't now... but it will in the future. There are millions of
sites with swf content that will have to be modified to make them work.
The "CLICK TO ACTIVATE" is a nightmare for SWF embedded MENUS.
    DISASTER! Switch to Firefox.
