Client begins updates but never finishes or installs

Discussion in 'Update Services' started by ZooAdministrator, Oct 10, 2007.

  1. I can't seem to find anyone with quite the same problem, so I thought I'd
check to see if it was something I am overlooking.

We have WSUS 3.0 server with Windows XP clients. When an update tries to
occur, I can see the client receive the packages in the
    \%systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, but eventually after
about 30 or 40 downloads, rather than leaving them and installing the ones it
did get, or saying that it failed, it deletes all the temp update files from
that folder and does not install anything. Then if you force a recheck for
updates from the server, it will do the same thing, over and over.

I have tried this as a local admin on the machine, a domain admin, a user...
and nothing seems to help. I know there are updates that need to occur but
they just won't update and I get no errors that help me figure out what is
going on. Has anyone had a similar problem?

I have checked the rights to the deployment folder on the server, I have
made sure IIS has anonymous access to this directory and it seems right. It
seems to communicate to this server and begin the download process, but then
stops mid stream and removes these updates.

Any ideas or places I can look? Here is the last part of the log:

  5. The error code 0x80190194 indicates a 404 (file not found) error from the server.

    Try entering the URL

    http://Server/Content/0C/2D9AEB49CE7E2E7FF250159C4E5B291104EEF90C.exe

into Internet Explorer and see what happens.

  6. It seems that my paths are somehow not working correctly. I can browse to the
folder and see the files, but when I enter in the pathname to internet
explorer like you suggest I am not able to connect to the executable. I have
made sure all the rights are correct, and the share name is correct and
shared out... what do you think the problem is? Rights to the files seem
correct. As I have said, I can see the share through the browse command and
can browse to the files in that folder. Thanks for the help so far... I was
stumped as to what that log was trying to tell me really.

  7. You mean you've created a Windows share pointing at the WSUS content? That
won't help; the clients have to get the updates via HTTP (the web).

What error does Internet Explorer produce? Is there a corresponding error
    message in the IIS log?

    Harry.

  8. THere's an inconsistency between what this log shows, and what you're
    claiming.
Right here... somebody invoked a system shutdown.
But there were NO updates to install!
    The service has shutdown.

And 70 seconds later the service starts back up.

Here the detection found one update and queued a download request.
The job failed with an HTTP 404 error....
    Suggesting that either:
[a] The file is not physically present in the filesystem or
URLScan is installed and blocking the download of EXE files.

  9. Well it's nothing to do with sharing, because WSUS doesn't use "Shares".

If the file is physically present in the filesystem
=and= the /Content virtual directory is properly pathed to the
    ~\WSUSContent folder containing this file,

then that brings us back to URLScan
or something else "hiding" the EXE files from the HTTP protocol download
    attempt.

  10. The IIS error that I get is the 404 error. So it seems that IIS cant see it
for some reason, although the virtual directories are there and show through
IIS itsself, just not through a client browser.

The IIS log says this during the same time:

Where is the IE logfile that you would like?

Thanks for all your help so far.

  11. Just to be clear, two or three updates do work (Outlook Junk Email Filter and
Office 2003 SP3 are a couple I have seen), and these have come down and
installed, but all of a sudden lots of others do not install. When I deploy a
new machine, part of the build process is for the updates to apply at around
10 am, but even on new machines now most updates fail. Checking the microsoft
updates page I see 40 to 60 updates, but WSUS is a no go.

And I do see updates populate the Downloads folder, before it decides to
stop and subsequently delete eveything from the updates folder. Does that
point to something else? Could a corrupted update do this? How do you fix a
corrupted update if that does happen? Do you just delete it an resynch or do
you have to do something more complicated?

    Thanks for all your help.

  12. I'm a bit out of my depth here as I'm not terribly familiar with IIS. However,
I suggest you check what path on disk the virtual directory /Content points to,
and see whether those specific files actually exist or not. Also check what
port /Content is published to; the client is trying to find it on port 80 if I
read the log correctly, but WSUS sometimes installs to an alternate port.

  13. Neither of which are EXE based updates.
My understanding of the WUA management behavior of the Downloads folder is
that it only deletes content on one of three conditions:
[a] It believes the update has been successfully installed.
It determines the update is not applicable to the system.
[c] Routine "housekeeping" purges content because of the age of the
    download.
A corrupted update would likely log an error relevant to a bad digital sig
on the file, or result in a *failed* installation, which would also be
    logged.

In the instant case, the log entries I read from your postings indicate the
*download* is not succeeding at all.
If the update is corrupted, you'll need to delete the content from the WSUS
server, run 'wsusutil reset' to re-download the content from microsoft.com
(or the upstream server), and then delete the content from the client and
rerun 'wuauclt /detectnow' to trigger a fresh download of the new file.
