I want some of my client machines to download the latest updates directly
from Microsoft instead of the WSUS server. All of the client updates will be
managed by a WSUS Server but I want them to connect to microsoft to get the
physical update. I know this is possible but can not figure out how to
    configure the client policy.

Click on options using the top right icon, then synchronisation options,
and then click the advance button at the bottom.
Its the bottom buttin in the Updates Files box that you need.

You can only say to WSUS that ALL clients download from Microsoft, or ALL
clients download from the WSUS server.

Unless you have multiple WSUS servers in your network, than you can
configure each WSUS seperatly for this setting.

Thank You Jason and Lon for your quick replies.

My original thought was to have each computer configured based on location
as to where they should get their updates. After reading your solutions I
have rethought my plans and will now set up a parent server and child server
for all the clients to connect to.

We will set group policy by location and machines will connect to either the
parent server with all the updates available or connect to the child server
for install approval and then go to microsoft to get the updates.

This solution will reduce WSUS management considerably. I will now have
only to WSUS servers to maintain and they can both be local. My original
plan called for 8 WSUS sites.

  5. This is also not an option, Jon.

From p19 of the Deployment Guide:
"If you have multiple WSUS servers chained together, each WSUS server in
the chain must use the same update storage option"

What you'll need to do is set up two /independent/ WSUS servers. One which
is configured to use local storage, and the other which is configured to use
    no storage.
