Company web goes down when internet goes down

  1. Hi there

I have a problem and I do hope that somebody can give me an idea how can I
    put it right.

I use two have a two nic's scenario but I had to change to one nic scenario
becouse we use an Avaya IPoffice telephone system and runing as before
created us issues related to network translation.

Everything was working fine until our broadband starts playing up . We got
the BT engineers on the case and it seems there are some issues at the BT
    Exchange point.

However when the internet goes down we can not use the companyweb or any
other aplications and we can not even print to the shared printers. As soon
as the internet is coming back everything works fine.

I am sure it's something related to DNS and name resolution resolving. My
question is : How can I configure the SBS box with one Nic so the server
functionality remains unafected when internet goes down?

    The configuration now is :
    Server Ip adress : 192.168.16.2
    Router : 192.168.16.5

The router is configured as the gateway .

    Thank you .

    Eduard

  2. Hi Eduard:

If the router is also the switch, it could be as simple as the router/switch
    going off line.

However, as to your questions about DNS, please post back the results of:

    ipconfig /all > c:\iptest.txt

from both a workstatation and the SBS server.

  3. Hi Larry

It seems I managed to isolate the problem . The culprit is the gateway .
As soon as I unplug the router when the broadband is down everything works .
If internet is coming back then again everything works . The problems is
when Internet goes down than nothing works unless I unplug the router.
I don't think this should happened is it normal if the internet goes down
than everything else is affected . Please if anybody has any ideea just let
    me know please.

I pasted my setings so you can have a look. The router is a Cisco and I am
having a separate switch where all the workstations are pluged in.

    Best regards ,

    Eduard
